« on: August 09, 2007, 04:04:06 am »

- a good screen (indoor/outdoor)

- lightweight (<1.5kg)
- will run linux

It might but most probabbly not as it is currently for any of the Z models as the hardware is different.

I've seen x86 based toughbooks running standard x86 linux that might be quicker then porting to a new hardware ... and there is a x86 based model that has 12 hour battery life (the toughbook cf-w5 or cf-t5) ... but I think that for the price of the toughbook you could buy more then one 3200.

Thanks for the info,
it is really hard to find devices with good battery life!
Pity the other toughbooks aren't tablets, really wanted that form factor.
Other x86 options are electrovaya 3100 (8 hours) or fujitsu p1610 (6 hours)
Or an irex iliad even....

This is starting to get really off topic though....

Ah, but there's nothing quite like a fully armoured Toughbook. I've got a CF-M34 mkI - celeron 300a, 192mb ram, 40gb HD, 800x600 touchscreen. This thing is *astonishing*! I've read several stories about these things saving lives by blocking bullets - and I can believe it

Needless to say, when I took my trip to Japan, the Toughbook was the machine I brought with me.

Unfortunately, the last time I tried to get linux on it there was no way to calibrate the touchscreen. (There are *drivers*, but compiling the calibration tool required recompiling X! All of it! No can do...)

The other downsides to my old model are lack of any sort of built in networking and an inability to boot from USB. I've got the (relatively rare and expensive) docking station - but that's just got a floppy disc  OS installation is a matter of tearing it apart and throwing the drive in another machine. Always very annoying.
Fujitsu U8240 "Stormtrooper" -  Zaurus Supplement
Libretto U100 | Sony Librie, Sony Reader
SL-C3100: Sharp 1.11JP (Kanji Dictionary/Translator) - LCD Top swap with C1000.
SL-C3000: pdaXii13 5.4.7, SL-C3000 5.4.9 - microdrive replaced with 8gb Sandisk
SL-C1000: PDAXRom Beta3 | SL-6000L: Sharp 1.12 | SL-5500: Cacko, 64-0 kernel | SL-5000D: OZ-Opie
Linksys WCF12; Sharp CE-AG06, CE-RH2, CE-170TS; iRiver USB OTG Host cable; Socket BT rev.E CF; Hitachi 6gb Microdrive
