Video On Titchylinux

 I thought a thread on video on TitchyLinux would be useful.

As I mentioned in the sound thread I installed mplayer. It runs from the command line and I got it to load a small cartoon file. No success with sound but the video did play. It was like a very slow slide show. Left foot moves...pause...right foot moves.. etc.

The image was as good as on my other devices but it was stop photography.

Speaking of photography, gcview displays some images without problem, but seemed to choke on large ones. I'm not sure that this is really a problem with the app, I have a suspicion that my 1GB SD card is giving TitchyLinux a problem. I actully am wondering if the card is faulty. I'll see what happens when I mount a CF card.

How much swap do you have?  Without swap, I'd bet it'd simply choke on too large an image since it is running out of ram.  Swap will make it slow down, but not stop, when you load a big image.  

I have about 200meg of swap on a separate partition.  If you don't have a partition, you can make a swap file, which is what I did with Angstrom.  it works reasonably well, though a separate partition is a bit faster.

I seem to be able to load all of my pictures with gqview (not the same as gcview??).  Loading is fairly quick, panning is  a little jerky.

What do you mean by "large" images?  I can load a 1 mb jpg file with no trouble, but that is the biggest I have available at the moment.  If you are talking about these huge photoshopped images that are hundreds of meg, then I don't think they will load, But the usual j-pegs you get from pocket-sized digital cameras are OK.

I don't think it does choke on large images after all. I suspect something got corrupted when I tried to copy from SD to microdrive using filemanager.

  I meant GQview! You knew that really didn't you? Lack of sleep and too much caffeine!  

I must see if I can install gparted and have a look at the partitions, I'm sure that the installation process said something about a swap partition. I definitely need to check and if there isn't one, do something about it. If there isn't one might explain some twitchy happenings. Might also help with video? Thanks for the hint.

I did install gparted, seems to work nicely, it also seems to have installed various other bits and pieces which has given me a lot of menu to browse through!

This is what it says about the 6GB microdrive:

dev/hda1    ext3       /    1.76GB
dev/hda2    extended
      dev/hda5    linux swap    180.39 MB
      dev/hda6    /home          3.78 GB

It did of course report on how much of the non-swap partitions were used/free.

Well, it does occur.  A swapfile or partition is a good idea.

Not really.  That's one thing I'd like Neil to fix with his installer, is that it just goes ahead and creates one big partition.  No room for a swap partition, nor for saner partitioning of the drive.

So, you partitioned your drive on installation, which was the right thing to do, and you have plenty of swap.  Check with "free" to be sure it's on, but it probably will be.  It won't make video faster, though.  Only lots more ram would fix that, and I think we are SOL as far as that goes.

  I'm not sure why you want the installer changed here? One of the later stages of the install process is to partition the disk and as you saw I chose the guded scheme with separate home partition and a swap partition. You can choose to partition under guidance with multi-partitions or even manually and choose whatever scheme you wish.  

Swap is on according to free and top. I'm wrestling with sound now, still haven't got a peep out of it! Using the comment about soundhack and using a sound-problem howto from the Ubuntu forums. Wish me luck.  

I have a sneaky feeling that some brave soul is going to have to recompile Akhty's mplayer and BVDD driver for this distro, to solve the video problem. If it turns out to be be then brave translates into foolhardy!   I'm pretty much a novice at cross compiling!

Why cross compile - surely  Debian must  have a native compiler?
Must admit I use my Z for music ALL the time and so I am holding back on going to Debian until sound gets sorted.
The latest mixer/sound stuff in pdaxii13 is just awesome.

  I'd assume the time to natively compile a project might be rather long? Of course I could just leave the thing chunking away... and go out for a meal.  

I suppose the fact that sound doesn't appear to work well on angstrom might be the reason for the TitchyLinux problem.   I've been told that this kernel is an angstrom one.
