Usbnet (includes Ax88772 Driver)

I've been looking all over the net for a driver for my Linksys USB 2 dongle. Model number USB200M ver 2.1
This one uses the later AX88772 driver. The previous dongle with same model number used AX88178 driver.

The compact USB 2.0 to Ethernet / Fast Ethernet adapter sold by Cisco under their Linksys brand name comes in at least two varieties: the older version is based on the ax88172 chipset, the newer one (August 2005 or newer) is based on the ax88772 chipset. These two different versions have the same model number (USB200M), and can perhaps only be distinguished by serial numbers.

I found this "generic" usbnet.c file which includes the AX88772 driver

I zipped it up and attached it here. The zip file contains "usbnet.c"
I want to know if this can be compiled and if it will support more USB LAN dongles, including mine which has the ax88772 chip.

After googling for a long time, there are a lot of these dongles on the market, and they are easily available at Staples and other local stores.
There is a good reason to "backport" this driver, since so many people have these dongles.
I also attached the source file from Asix. "AX88178_772_LINUX2.6.14_REV102.tar.gz"

Are there not any requests for this driver to be compiled?
I cannot purchase stuff online, so I buy stuff from local stores.
I am clueless as to compiling stuff, and what would it take to get this driver to be included into pdaxii13?

No one seems to be concerned about getting this driver to work in pdaxrom, (or Cacko either) so I'm bumping this thread.

I would compile it for you, but I don't have the stuff necessary to do so. I'm not going to convert my main machine (the only one that works for a pdaX86 install) to a pdaX dev environment, spend hours getting the SVN stuff and building the kernel, then copy it all over to an SD card to build the module on my Z, which would have to be reverted to Beta3/pdaXii13.

I do my best to help out, but that's pushing it IMO. Maybe if I get a virtual machine set up with the necessary stuff, but that's not TOO likely.

I was hoping I would get someone to respond and say if this is possible. I wasn't sure if this could be accomplished.
When I googled for Ax88772 driver, I got many hits to a forum about TiVo and someone backporting this from several 2.4.xx kernels to 2.4.20. This is what made me wonder if this could done.

I don't think it's a dumb question, but perhaps people aren't interested in the driver, so they assume "Somebody who is interested will post..."

I also don't like to make "I would do it, but..." posts. Then people see somebody has replied, and get their hopes up that somebody will be offering a solution. I think that's kind of a mean thing to do.

first, unless someone has the said hardware themselves, they aren't very likely be motivated to get it working or compile a driver for it.
second, the driver source you attached is for a 2.6 kernel, so it would not compile on a 2.4 kernel anyway and backporting it would require the first point to be satisfied.
third, even if the second point is satisfied, you still need the necessary skills to hack the driver/back port it since it is not trivial.

Thank you meanie, I didn't realize this process was so complex.
I decided to throw that dongle that requires the AXIS driver into a box of unused stuff, and get one referenced in this thread.

As a side note on USB dongles. I would advise against DM9601 dongles, as they apparently don't work with dbcpcd.
