5500 version 2.38
« on: March 15, 2004, 01:46:32 pm »
Hi folks, i just bought the 5500 on line for 199.00 - I need it for simple calendar and contact management and love the QWERTY functionality.  My question is should i download all the updates from the Sharp site?  It seems like the version I bought is the oldest - ROM version 2.38.  I am not a geek so go easy   Any setup tips would be great too - THANKS!

Welcome to Zaurustralia.  I think the 3.1 ROM is sufficiently better than the 2.38 to make it worth your while.  Do you have a docking cradle?  If so, and if your connection is to a Windows PC, the upgrade is pretty simple and the instructions are at the Z site.  There\'s lots of help available right here, too.

I made exactly the same purchase (I\'m assuming you purchased from TigerDirect). I have some additional questions. I\'m running Win XP Pro. When I installed the Qtopia software that came with SL5500, XP gave me a \"Not Certified\" warning but it seems to be working fine. However, I\'d like to update where possible to software that\'s \"officially\" compatible with XP hence the following questions. There\'s 2 3.13 downloads available here for windows. One looks like the full ROM and the other seems to indicate it\'s a win update. Which do I need or do I need to install  3.13 and then the win update. Also, I just downloaded Qtopia Desktop 1.7 from Trolltech\'s site. I\'m assuming this is the latest. I\'m using the USB connection to my PC. Is there a USB update that I need or would it be included in Qtopia 1.7?

Thanks in advance for any help.

USB update should be with the Qtopia desktop software.

One\'s probably just a ROM image c.16Mb in size which you use to flash with a CF card (the best method IMHO), the other\'s probably a Windows app which does the flash some other way (it should be slightly larger if this is the case), however I\'m not sure whether the Windows app will actually work (as you\'re running an old ROM).

When I upgraded my 5500 from 2.38 to 3.10, I used the Windows app that came with the update.  I don\'t remember how to do it anymore, but all I did was follow the instructions that came with the update files.  Just be careful and follow each step as it is listed, don\'t take shortcuts (either deliberately or accidentally).
