Hi all!

Well I thought it would be nice to have a topic about who has or going to get the OpenMoko Freerunner.
You all know (or not) it is a "Open" Smartphone.

What about you?

I thought it had a 500 MHz CPU?

Anyway, I'm going to do my best to get my hands on one, but my budget is working against me as hard as it can

As far as I know it is 400 in idle state and 500 in working state.

Yeah it is pretty expensive. But all gadgets are expensive
I bought my unit at pulster.de
It has been shipped today, so it will arrive this week!

They wanted to look to much like the iphone

That is also one of the things I really miss at this device, then again a touchscreen keyboard should do the trick (still not as good though)

I guess you are looking for something like this (-WM of course):

http://www.htc.com/www/product.aspx?id=49518

I've been waiting on Openmoko to get the consumer hardware finished for 2 years or so.  I've already committed the $$ for it and I'm looking forward to it.  While a keyboard would be nice my current phone is on it's last legs and I would like to see the Openmoko project succeed.  I also don't see a lack of keyboard being a HUGE problem since there is USB and Bluetooth on the device.

Overall, I think it will be a pretty sweet phone.  That probably won't come to pass until a year from now when the software matures.  The good news is that any later devices will be able to expand on the existing code base.

For me it is all about supporting a open platform (more open than Android) with my money.  So, I guess I'm a zealot that way. The hardware and current software short comings are not relevant to me when looking at the benefits of freedom on such a platform.  I can understand people not thinking it is cool, because there is better hardware and software (see right above).  Long term though, I feel that I am making the right choice in supporting OM to keep producing open hardware.

I agree. It is only a phone (I know, it's more than that, but still). Still, I need excuses not to get one (my budget couldn't handle it).

I totally agree with that. Android is a step in the right direction, but it's not quite what I want. I guess that makes me a zealot too

That's why I said -WM or minus Windows Mobile.  A little cryptic of me I suppose.  Hardware like that with completely running Linux would be awesome.

RX shorty, that is hilarious that Pulster ships with gummy bears how German of them.

RX,

can you please post some info on the device?

- what internet browser uses? ajax/flash support?

- what is battery performance ?

- external speaker for handsfree operation ?

- video playback performance ?

- touchscreen sensivity/performance? compared to an iphone?

I think I'll wait for the 3G version... and maybe in the meanwhile I'll get an iphone.....

Offcourse

There is no browser standard installed, but you can install Minimo (mozilla based, not tested yet)

- what is battery performance ?
Cannot tell you much about that right now, but what I read around the mailinglist etc, it is not poor but not very good either.

- external speaker for handsfree operation ?
Yes there is an Handsfree option that works pretty good

- video playback performance ?
Also a media player isn't installed by default, need to test it sorry.

- touchscreen sensivity/performance? compared to an iphone?
The performance is very good. Also the sensivity is good, you can tap really fast with losing a tap.

I think I'll wait for the 3G version... and maybe in the meanwhile I'll get an iphone.....
All I can say is that the Iphone is Ready to Use, Openmoko needs some time to play with, then again you have something very special

I will let you know if I tested more, then again I have to wait for the weekend before I have some time

According to the this thread on the mailing list:

http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/commun...uly/020339.html

As power management gets implemented battery life is improving.  The GTA01 (FreeRunner is GTA02) had terrible battery life, 8 hours of operation from what I read.  With new software it is getting 21 hours and there are even more things to implement.  So, battery life will get better, but currently power management needs a lot of work.
