Sd/mmc Mod Process
« on: August 12, 2008, 06:14:20 am »
So i'd like to try adding space via the SD/MMC mod. having read the various wiki entries and forum posts, if i understand correctly, I need:
  • SD card
  • cheap SD -> USB adapter (optional?)
  • ribbon cable 0.5mm pitch 20 pin ?
  • adapter - this? or this?
  • wire and assorted soldering bits and bobs
I'm happy dismantling the Simpad, and am competent at soldering small components. Is this all I need, or am I missing something?

Secondly, does anyone know a UK firm that has the ribbon cable components? alternatively, would someone be wiling to order the parts on my behalf, and then post them to the uk? the lc-design site did not seem to offer international sales.

Thirdly, what is the most recent recommended bluetooth module? I am less interested initially in this mod, but would probably try it if there was a cheap module.

Thanks in advance for any help

So...

did some digging on my own for parts in the UK

digikey have ribbon cables: part number WM10218-ND is a 0.5mm pitch 20 position ribbon cable - £2.56
or farnell stock a similar cable part number 1519830 - £1.05
no sign of a suitable adapter in the UK yet - this sounds like a good fit but no idea if i could buy just one - i'll check. EDIT: turns out i can buy this singly. quote from quadrangle - RT-700G-20-DIS 1-24    $34.95 ea. 3-5 day lead time

there's this pcb which would make an adapter if i could get an fpc connector soldered onto it...

I can order the parts for you in germany and send them to uk for you if you like. But I did not do the mod myself. So I can not help you with the other questions. I will do my mod in a few weeks or month (I already own all parts from a donation).

Please note everything you wonder about the howtos and report/change the stuff so that the wiki gets better .

best regards

I too am trying to get the SD/MMC mode to work. I did a "blue" wire mod. See attached

I would like to test. Did you ever get it to work in the latest Angstrom release -r18 (or any for that matter). I am having no luck.

Hi,

the current mmc-mod-driver for kernel 2.6.24 in Angstrom -r18 is not working for now.
I have made new patches, witch works since 8 months on my own simpad.
This driver is in very beta-stage and no good example for clean programming, but it works.

Hi,

I'm interested in the patch, too.

Hi,

Found this
http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-ke...08/7/18/2569664

What do you think? Can it be modified to map the proper GPIO's & get incorporated into Simpad builds?

Regards,
MJ

The simpad mmc/sd drivers are derivated from an old version of the openwrt drivers. So it would be possible. It would be nice to have some new drivers which uses mainline api .
I only have some older sources from mister data and they are inlcuded at openembedded tree. I may missed some part of the source while creating the patches from mister datas kernel sources but unfortunately I don't have the mod on my pad and I am unable to test.
If anyone has new patches please also send them to me so I can try to integrate them to oe.

best regrads

Hello@all!

I´m new to the forum cause I was curious with working on/with the Simpad and came through opensimpad.org in here.

I tried images with 2.4 kernel and 2.6 kernel. Now I´m using 2.4 cause there is a module for mmc available.
BUT I would love to use the newer 2.6 images in my "bluetoothed and sd" Simpad.

Is there a compiled module respectively driver available for sd/mmc. That would be great.

Thx in advance for your help,

eazee

Btw, I´m also missing some useful software for 2.6 kernel images like minicom and synergy client/server ;-)

did you test the different images from http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/ ?

Which type of bt stick / modul do you use ... which type of mmc/sd adapter do you use ... I try to bye one bt adapter from notebook with serial connection but I could not get any technical docu :-(

@eazee
The driver is build into the kernel, but it seems that this version of the driver is not working. We need to wait for mister data or some one else to submit the driver or write a new driver for it.

best regards
mr nice

btw: I usualy do not answer quicker on private messages then on public ones
The time needed to answer questions is the same and I prefere to answer on public questions because more people profit from that.

Hey all!

@Martin: Yes, I tested Angstrom 2.6er images and the Familiar0.8.4 with kernel 2.4.
I use a BTM 222 bluetooth module from 1-2-3 bay ;-) and just soldered a microSD socket.
Software: I browsed the feeds and there a few "missing", sometimes you can use the packages from the familiar feeds when there are no problems with libraries.

@mr_nice: Thanks, I didn´t want to be rude, just hoped you get an email that there is a PM here, so that your answer is coming faster ;-)
Are there images with kernel 2.6 with working driver for sd?

eazee

Hi there!

So could anyone please provide me an image (kernel 2.6) with the built-in sd/mmc-driver?

I appreciate your help. (If anyone needs something for fritzbox or dbox2, please let me know ;-) one hand washes the other one)

Thx in advance,

eazee
