Screen protector - Overlay Brilliant
« on: March 19, 2004, 01:37:10 am »
Anyone knows whether any shop in Singapore or Malaysia carries the Overlay Brilliant (by Miyavix) screen protector?

I am resigned to needing to cut down a screen protector to fit my C760, but would like to get the clearest possible one and Internet reviews of the Overlay Brilliant seem to be pretty impressive.

Or any other alternative brands to recommend for a clear view and which doesn\'t leave residue on the screen when peeled off?

I used a martin fields nx70 protector on my c760, bought from doml in funan.  The guy even gave me two sets of wipes in case I screwed up.  Unfortunately, although the length is ok after I cut it, the width (height?!?) does leave a gap of about 1.5-2mm in total.

I also bought two overlayplus from conics, but they were matt finish and not as good as the martin fields, so I reapplied (and now have dust bunnies, sigh!), so I can attest that the martin fields doesn\'t leave a residue - not that I noticed anyway!

On my 5500 I have one of the G2\'s:

http://www.pdascreenprotectors.com/

It\'s extremely tough & clear (it does add a slight bumped texture but it\'s not a problem).  I don\'t know if they make a version that fits the clamshell Z\'s, though.

Overlay Brillant is the clearest scren protector I\'ve come across and in japan they have a version for the Cxx0 models.

From memory Brando used to sell them - they are in Hong Kong but deliver everywhere

Stu

NOTE: DO NOT GET THE OVERLAY PLUS - they are a poor replacement, I was very dissapointed in them (Sorry for shouting)

I have this funny feeling that the MF Overlay Plus may be Miyavix\'s Overlay Brilliant branded differently.  Why?  I took a close look at the photo of the MF package (http://forum.mypdacafe.com/viewtopic.php?t=10557&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=20779078ef7c782955f22eef28510042) and saw the following:
- 90% light transmittance (same as Miyavix\'s Overlay Brilliant)
- washing under tap photo is the same as that found on the Miyavix website (but for their Overlay Plus product))

If not, then it may just be closer to Miyavix\'s Brilliants than the Plus because:
- MF Overlay Plus and Miyavix Brilliant both claim to be clear.  And from what xarope says, the MF is clear and the Miyavix Plus is milky.
- I am reading quite consistently good reviews of both the MF Overlay Plus and the Miyavix Overlay Brilliant but consistently not good reviews of the Miyavix Overlay Plus.

Think I\'ll give the MF a go.

xarope, if you ever want to replace with another MF, try the one for the Zodiac -- it\'s 84.5mmx57mm -- need to trim the height but width is exact.  Think I\'ll try that.

xarope,
Any hope of a discount off the list price?

Read some comments on mypdacafe of people complaining of dust and scratches.  How\'s it for you so far?  And for how long?

BlackCardinal, I have a G2 on my SL5000D, but it was a real pain to apply, never again!

Stubear, agree on the Overlay Plus (hmm, I hope we are talking about the right brand, I\'ll have to check at home, but you are talking about the one with the matt finish right, versus the MF overplay plus which is a crystal clear finish?), I was so disappointed with the matt finish I took it off straightaway; you know how the default backgroud for the zaurus is this fine grained grey, well the matt finish completely distorted it!  Unfortunately for me, a waste of money.  I noticed that conics is now stocking the Overlay Brilliant instead.

watchthewaves, discount off which?  you mean from DOML?  Never got a discount from them yet!  I will try the zodiac one, at the time I bought it (last year) the closest was the one for the clie NX70, and probably after my trip to France I will replace the screen protector.

The Martin Fields seems good so far, umm say over 10 months.  When I had it first applied I only had a couple of dust bunnies under, and never got any more until I reapplied a few months later, now I have tons, and the sides of the protector aren\'t flush but that\'ll teach me to reapply!  No scratches that I can see, but I really only play mahjongg, go and missile command on it, rather than freecell type games.  Unless something better comes along I\'d be quite happy to buy another one (the zodiac size one of course if the width is better!)

Xarope,

I\'m refering to the Overlay Plus from Miyavix, the same company who market the Overlay Brilliant in Japan. The Overlay Brilliant comes in bright yellow packaging and the Overlay plus comes in a similair style greyish package from memory.

A review of the Overlay Brillaint is here

In Japan they are 1400 yen (about US$15) which I thought was really expensive for a screen protector (the overlay plus was 600 yen) but I\'ve had mine for 3 months now and it still looks perfect. I was showing off my Z to a friend who uses Palm nad after 15 minutes of playing with the Z said \"You know you should really get a screen protector for this!\" He went straight out and bought an overlay brilliant for his Sony Clie after that.

Nope.  Got the Martin Fields Overlay Plus.

Understand from other posts that the Miyavix Overlay Brilliant is clear whilst the Miyavix Overlay Plus is matt (ie non-reflective, so clarity suffers).  Don\'t confuse the MF Overlay Plus with the Miyavix Overlay Plus.  The MF Overlay Plus is clear!

Only thing I found was that it\'s quite a pain to apply perfectly and catch no bubbles or dust particles underneath.  But I found that although I can see these pretty clearly when the unit if off (because of the clear and reflective nature of the screen protector), once the screen is on, these can\'t be seen at all tho, so absolutely no problems with usage.

Although I am toying with the idea of going without any screen protector.  The plastic stylus appears sufficiently safe to use directly on the screen.  Has anyone scratched their screen using the provided stylus?

Yes I have a Overlay Brialliant for my C860, and agree with the posts here.  It is worth finding one if you can.  Not sure were you can get one on KL/SIN; have you tried Funan Center?  I seem to remember a place in Funan that had a few Zaurii, but unsure if they have the clamshell footprint nor the Overlay (don\'t hold me to this!!).  I got mine from Japan.

There is a UK e-tailor who will ship to SEAsia and also stocks the Overlay Brilliant; try http://www.shirtpocket.co.uk/cat/product_i...&products_id=47
Its about S$27 plus shipping there.

Another reccommendation for the Overlay Brilliant on a Cx60.....

I can honestly say it's visually indistinguishable from having no screen protector at all. I find that it does marginally affect the sensitivity of the touch screen in that it requires a slightly harder push on the stylus, but then again that's the whole point of screen protectors- you can use the stylus without worrying.

It is a pig to fit though. On my 5600 and my C860 I used the hot bathroom method as it's the only way (in my house anyway) of making sure there's minimal dust. Unfortunately I did exactly the same thing both times- I dropped it on the floor, resulting in the protector being caked with dust- and they're not easy to clean! I always find dust finds it way onto the underside of the protector when you have it half way installed. In this situation the only way I found to get the dust off is to use a piece of sticky tape to dab the dust off the protector.

Once it's fitted it's a dream though.
