Renaming The Forum

the name of this forum/board isn't really that meaningful

what do people think - keep the name, add a bit, lose a bit?

the only device which is routinely discussed is the zaurus, so it seems to me that a better name would simply be "the zaurus forum".

If "The Zaurus Forum" isn't already in use somewhere I totally agree that this is a much better name for the forum

What about people with Nokia N80/N81 or Simpad or such ?

I think the reason why these forums were originally called OESF was to embrace these other platforms. I can't see a good reason to relegate them. Is "Zaurus" hardware or software ?

I agree that Open Embedded Software Foundation is not particularly clear. The "foundation" part makes it sound like a charity. Face it, if you were searching on Google and found that title you probably wouldn't come here to discuss Maemo, Angstrom or Zaurus.

the nokia tablet community is very active on talk.maemo.org and I'd never come here other than to discuss porting maemo to zaurus.

I think of the zaurus as a package, hardware platform plus a range of possible OSs.

I don't know how active the simpad community is, whether there's alternative sites that are now the focus?

the "foundation" part, I agree, is pointless.

How about "zaurus-and-open-embedded-devices"
Is that too long? Maybe shorten it a bit.

'Zaurus and Friends' sounds good to me. But then I didn't realise the name had changed from ZUG until the first time I logged in without using the ZUG portal!

However: shouldn't this thread be in the forum for making suggestions and requests about the forums? And perhaps we should be asking for that forum to be 'lifted' up the first page we see to make it more obvious?

Somebody asked about a feed that was missing in action. I've got a copy and it might end up hosted somewhere later on. But there is a Cacko feed hosted by this group. The link to it is on the ZUG portal to these forums. Wouldn't it be a good idea to have the link in the title bar of these forums?

But coming back to my comment above. shouldn't these discussions, suggestions be taking place in the suggestions and requests forum? Might be a good place to find out if we have forum admins who are able to make these changes or if we need someone with expertise in mysql to explain how to do these changes?

Cheers

The reason it is OESF is because Mike and I actually had plans to register the whole thing as a non-profit.  He started the paperwork a while ago but I'm not sure whether or not he ever finished it.

We can change it as long as Ibiblio is willing to rehost us under the new name (which I don't foresee any problem with).

Not with ibiblio but with external links to 'www.oesf.org'...

I never thought this should only be a "Zaurus Forum" but should IMHO be open for all open and embedded devices...

Are you guys sure that changing the name of the forum is the top priority ?

IMHO there are many more ways to benefit the Zaurus community. For example, the wiki is in dire need of straightening out and updating. That's a task I started on a while back but the last 6-12 months I've been side tracked by other events in my life. It shouldn't even take that long because collectively we have the knowledge to do it.

We could also do with some nice clear guides on "How to..." do stuff; these could be wikified. If some time was spent making them look really good then that could help entice people back. I know of people with Zauruses who just stopped using them because they found it too difficult.

I also think that a lot of software has been cross compiled for other distributions, for example via the "What do you need compiled" threads - that's great but most of the software needs some work on the UI to make it work nice on a PDA and my feeling is that in a few cases only a minimal amount of tweaking was performed.

Something that might also help would be some up to date FAQs (a real one gleaned from questions).

If you are set on changing the forum name then here some suggestions (in no order):

Gods of Zaurus

Yeah, that's quite funny, especially considering that Open Embedded (as in the build system) has nothing to do with it. OE is now really an overloaded term

I agree with the original posters idea, there should be a rather catchy name, the name right now is short but doesnt really make you understand about open embeded software paltform

IIRC,  the last time a change was made with Ibiblio it turned out to be a complete mess and the site was down for a couple weeks or so.
I think you should leave well enough alone.
