New Zaurus user looking for advice.
« on: October 16, 2003, 11:25:32 pm »
Greetings all,

A week ago I ebayed me a Zaurus 5500 with a 256 meg SD card, a 32 meg CF, and a 802.11B network CF.  I also got a CD from the seller with several programs and purchased TKC software.  I have installed both the newest Sharp rom and The Kompany roms.  I was wondering what it is about these 2 roms that you avid users would suggest I settle on and why.  Here is what I have seen.

Sharp has the Opera browser I cannot get it installed on the Kompany rom it just won\'t unpack correctly.  For the most part I don\'t really need to browse on the zaurus in fact I don\'t care for it but having the ability and the simple fact that it just won\'t install makes me wanna get it on there.

The Kompany has by default SSH installed which is a major plus but I was able to get it working on Sharp rom.  (no big deal)

Sharp has by default the main PDA apps, address book,  Calendar, Email... but I was able to get the sharp PIM installed on TKC rom (again no big deal)

I also have a problem I think my 256 meg card has a bad sector or something formating no matter the type no matter the way I can\'t seem to get more then like 140 megs on it with out some kind of problem.  If the zaurus trys to access something (ie mp3 or video) on a ram sector higher then 140 it will lock the zaurus up... anyone know of an app (linux or winderz) other then format/scandisk or mkfs/fsck that I can check this guy out with?  I have a 6 in 1 reader connected to a linux box.  I am good in both linux and winders but this problem has just stomped me into the ground.. first time actually using a memory stick other then one of them pen drives.

Also where would you suggest a newbie go to get software or roms or whatever.....

thanks in advance I love this thing if I can just get it right where I want it I will love it even more...

I prefer the tkcrom to the Sharp rom mostly because it\'s extremely polished.  I also really like that proto was able to release his newest version with the ability to have /home run on the SD card.  This make for installing as many apps as I want, without ever worrying about space.

Though I go back and forth between the tkcrom and OZ.  I don\'t think I have either installed for more than a month at a time...

I have a newly flashed tkcrom (2.0 alpha3) on my 5500, and I just installed Opera6 (1.5.4), and it installed and ran fine... no issues.   Maybe you don\'t have the right version?  try this one.

Whenever I have troubles with a card, I usually just pop it into a card reader in either my windows box or suse box, and run the formatter.  Or most recently I use the nice graphical formatter on the new tkcrom (under the utlilities tab) to format a card...

Ok what really is burning my azz now is the ability for windows to sync with this thing but linux not to.  I feel I am an above average linux user..... running several systems with all kinds of different servers and what nots... apache, mail, smb, nfs, and I have a linux router/firewall for cable modem sharing.  Can do everything in linux that I used to be able to do in windows ... well used to now I can\'t sync this thing.  I have the usb0 ip working I can put the zaurus in the cradle and ssh to it via 192.168.129.201  but the damn qtopia desktop will not sync with it.  I have tried via the usb port via the wireless network have read several forum posts until my eyes bleed and my azz is sweaty from sitting in this chair all day.  I only wanna sync my addresses to my zaurus because I have so many of them and syncing from a PC rather then typing them in on the little keyboard or with the stylus would be so much faster.  Windows XP will talk it it just fine what am I missing in my linux setup.... what other info would help you help me?

redhat 9
zaurus 5500 using thekompany rom
qtopia desktop ver 1.7.0

also I still can\'t get opera to load offroadgeek trying to use 1.5.4 and I get the error
ipkg says something went wrong. Sorry.

can\'t get to the kompany\'s rom page to get the rom you suggested either must be down ?  don\'t suppose you could send it to me? or link it from somewhere else?

Thanks again...

Sharp changed the PIM engine in the 3.x ROMs, which theKompany ROM is based on. This made it incompatible with the version of Qtopia Desktop that Trolltech supplies and Sharp has not released a Linux version of their Qtopia Desktop that works with their PIM engine and probably won\'t
