How to install the new Socket WiFi driver?
« on: March 23, 2004, 01:26:54 am »
I just bought a Socket CF Wifi card but no joy. This is a newer model based on the Agere chipset. Agere drivers are available here http://www.agere.com/support/drivers/wl_lk..._release.tar.gz.

I guess I have to setup a cross-compiler environment, but I don\'t know how. I\'m running Gentoo linux.

I don\'t know if these drivers work, but I do know that we need to try something. Everyone buying the newer Socket CF Wifi card won\'t be able to get them to work with this ROM.

I\'d love to help out but need instructions how to setup the cross-compiler environment and rebuild PCMCIA and Agere drivers.

I\'ll try to build the drivers for you. But since I don\'t have that card, I won\'t be able to test them...

I compiled the Agere \'wlag\' driver on Mandrake linux and tried the card in a laptop with a CF-PCMCIA adapter.
The light does come on, wlan0 shows up in iwconfig so it becomes a recognized adapter.
However, it does not receive any signal and dmesg shows some suspicious looking messages. No idea what they mean. (I don\'t have them handy right now else I\'d list them).
Bottom line is that the driver doesn\'t work on this card. I can provide more detail if someone wants to look further into it. Just let me know.

Sorry, thanks for offering to port it, but I don\'t want to waste your time.
Cheers,

May I ask which card it is?  Do you have a link to it?  I\'m looking at buying a new wifi card and don\'t want to get one that doesn\'t work.

It is the new Socket card.

The old model: WL6000 (part-nr 8510-00186; prism2 chipset) works with the standard drivers, has good performance and is very power friendly according to many people.

The newer models: WL6004 (part-nr 8510-00212) and WL6006 (part-nr 8510-00216; agere chipset) don\'t have linux or windows drivers. The only drivers are for PocketPc at the moment.

According to the web site the old version is no longer available.    With some luck you can find old stock.

Went to Fry\'s today and bought a Socket CF Card, yep the Agere kind.
Shoulda\' made notes on the difference in the two cards\' appearance.
(You know, maybe d/l the photos from socketcom and had them on hand while shopping.  That _was_ one of the reasons for buying the Z in the first place.)

The old Socket card looks just like the Symbol CF card, by the way, just different labeling.
To add insult to injury, I learned (too late) that Costco sells the SanDisk 256 MB SD card for USD65 compared to Fry\'s USD80.  Bleah!

The one bright spot was the Panasonic RC-HP50 noise-cancelling earbuds.
They do nicely at suppressing \'steady\' noise like fans, not as well with my daughter\'s music.  The noise cancelling circuitry housing has a volume control along with the power switch.  That makes adjusting the volume _much_ more convenient.

There you have it.  Purchase in haste, repent at your leisure.

P.S.

If Agere drivers ever come to fruition, I\'d be grateful.
