HELP!!! No Power to my Z
« on: October 25, 2003, 01:01:32 am »

I am sooo screwed!! Please someone help me!!

I just recieved a SL-5500 off of e-bay. The device worked fine, but after reading around on the ZUG forms... I decided to bite the bullet & flash the ROM to v3.1. (Original Rom was v.2.7)

I followed all the steps, completed a full reset. (Followed the Instructions from the Unoffical Zaurus FAQ.) When I turned the Z back on, it showed the Sharp Black screen, and had the Blinking white cursor in the bottom right hand of the screen.  (No Boot) I tried to repeat the process two times, with the same results.  (NADA!)

I then tried to flash back down to v.2.7, and now after the 4th time... the Z does not turn on at all! I place the battery in the back, and plug the Z into the wall.. but no amber light... nothing. Have I just screwed myself here, or is there hope?

Thanks!!

Amanoj

there are several posts on the forums about this... but here are some quick thoughts...

-did you use the ospack or initrd.bin + zImage method for flashing?

-for either of those methods, did you make sure that you had no other files in the root directory?

-did you delete and re-download the files to make sure you got a clean copy?

I used the Ospack file in the Root of the CF card. Nothing else was on the card. I tried to d/l the correct files 2 times. (Once from ZUG, the other time direct from Sharp.) At this point I cant even turn the Z on.

Thanks,

try leaving you battery out of the z for several minutes... and maybe try the initrd.bin and zImage files instead... try a different rom (tkc)... these suggestions may not work.. but what have you got to lose, right?

this might be a no brainer question but have you tapped the reset button on the back after the flash?

best of luck!

Something else you can check, is the switch on the back of your Zaurus set in the \"normal operation\" position or the \"replace battery\" position?  When it is in the \"replace battery\" position, the Zaurus will act like it has no power.

Hello.
I have a zaurus 5500 and please I have a question:
I did not charge my 5500 for some days, and suddenly when I plug the ac power cord did not charge at all, neither the yellow battery charging led worked nor zaurus worked again!!
Please this is a battery or a serious problem with the Zaurus?
this device works just with the ac power cord, or always needs a battery? since with or without it never turns on again...

thanx in advance..

Hello,

maybe your internal battery is down, so you must load your Z about 24 hours with the external charger.

Uhmm I did already tried this:
- Soft and full reset.
- Recharged with the external ac for more than 2 days.

I just need to know if it is a hardware problem or just a battery problem. Since  when I plugged the device to the power cord,  the zaurus just some minutes later became quite hot but neither yellow battery led worked nor zaurus workeed...

Uhmm thanx for any advise, Ijust need to know if someone had this problem and how to resolve it...

the owners manual says that you must charge the battery for 24 hours so that it is fully charged when you first get the unit... if you missed that step the battery may be drained and you may need to leave the unit turned off... battery in... switch in the normal operation mode... and let the unit charge the battery all the way up.

from what you have posted I think that maybe the flash went wrong and you never got it to compleat after that... did you leave the unit plugged into the ac all the time while you were flashing the os? did both lights come on and stay on for a while?

well, If you are sure that your Z is getting hot, Im affraid that it is no good sign about your Z... Hum, with this the only last resource before send it to service is try to find another Z that could be used to compare with a battery that is for sure that  is good...  in that case, as I said previously, you could check a cell battery store about a replacement... about why the Z fail only for stay disconnect,I reallycould dont say anything, because is really rare, and about the service cost, I could said you noting too, because really dependes of the country where you are.... and I REALLY KNOW how hard and EXPENSIVE could be the service if you not are in Europe or USA.... and at least me, Im very clear that the Z now reaches a LOT OR OTHER countries around the world EVEN IF sharp didnt had a representative in there....
well, one last hope is that your Z could be heated by a side effect of a damaged battery, but if this is the cause, is very possible that your Z motherboard trouble could be in the charge circuit, so may be it could be because a faulty rectifier diode or a damaged capacitor, but if the factory service is so expensive that the most  reasonable option is to discard your Z, you could also try to servic it with a local electronic repair service or try to sell your Z for spare (for the screen may be you could get some reaonable money that could you help with a replacement...)

Sad that I could said something more helpfull to you, but I didnt had more ideas that the previous or let your Z disconnected for a week before retest the tihings

Best regards!
