SL5600 Newbie Blues
« on: April 05, 2004, 07:23:59 pm »
I have had my 5600 for about 3 weeks now...  The only rom that I like is the OZ rom (3.3.6-1).  I am having lots of problems with it though and I can\'t find any answers.  At the moment I am only using a 256mb CF.

My biggest issue other than the screen not refreshing properly is that half the bundled apps don\'t work.  I haven\'t been able to install (with success) anything.  I get a _7QString.shared_null for almost anything I try to do.

I wan\'t to get a stable config and eventually move everything to a 512sd, leaving the the CF open for the Cypress USB Host card. =]

Any input would be very helpful.

Thank You

OZ 3.3.6-1 is an \"experimental\" OS and is not stable (the documentation even states that it\'s \"incompatible with the rest of the world\").

The \"undefined symbol: _7QString.shared_null\" error is caused by incompatible libraries - have a look at IronGeek\'s website under \"OpenZaurus\" for help/fixes

http://www.irongeek.com/all.php

If you like OZ/OPIE, go back to OZ 3.3.5 or even 3.2

Personally, i use tkcROM 2.0 Alpha 3 (Sharp-based ROM) and have very few complaints about it.

Experimental, very... I have looked at that page many times before.  I guess I am having trouble all around... well the file system mostly.  I am unable to install anything to the internal... there is only like 2mb left.

As for previous versions, I can\'t get them to flash or boot properly on my 5600.  It is hard for me to get files to the Z.. I must copy them over to a CF via my buddies Pocket PC :/ I am also limited because I only have access to DoD computer systems, can\'t always do what I want on them.
(Still waiting on the Air-Cable =])

All I want to do on my z is have a good PIM suite, play some classic consoles and listen to mp3\'s - I got the Cypress USB Host CF and an 80gb HD with external power.  The setup works fine with a PCMCIA-]CF adaptor under Win32 so I hope I can compile the drivers for the Z.

I will check out the tkc rom - if I can find a DL link.
Thanks

Check the downloads/ROMs area here on the ZUG.

To fix the screen refresh issue you could try:

echo 1 ] /proc/sys/kernel/printk

I am using 3.3.6pre1 on my 5600 without any really major glitches (though I can\'t say it was easy getting everything working as I want).  I have both an ATP 256MB MMC card (with ext2) and a 1GB CF Microdrive and they both work fine with my Z.  I use my Z as a PIM with Portabase (where I have several databases for lists of movies, books and music, as well as address/contact information that I imported from my PalmV) and KOPI to act as a calendar/appt-manager.

There is a problem with KOPI, which is that the kopi alarm applet does not work on OZ.  The other complaint that I have is that applications take waaaay too long to load (25 to 40 seconds) compared to the near instantenous load times on my PalmV.  This is a really serious impediment to using the Z as more than just a toy.  One last thing is that I need to reboot the Z before USB networking works.  Otherwise I am pretty content.

I was able to get the tkc rom installed and working.  It is a little slim, but stable.  most of the ipks I have will not even show up in the installer, and when I try to manually install them it complains about bad files.  I don\'t understand how so many got corrupted though.  I will get a chance later today to get fresh copies of the files.

Anyone know if the UltraII series of SD cards gives a performance boost over the standard SD?

Thanks

What is the easiest way to get apps to my Z using the cradle, Win2k, and Qt?  I installed QtDesktop but that didn\'t help anything.  And where can find this magical generic usb networking driver I keep reading about?

Are all ipks compatable with Qt?

If you have the Sharp ROM (or compatible) you just put the Z in the cradle, load the PC software off the CD onto you Windows box and run Zaurus File Transfer. Personally, I installed theKompany ROM 1.0 which comes with SSH server. So, I use a graphical windows programd (WinSCP3) to transfer files via the network. You can setup the network either with a network interface on your Z, or you can change the cradle link from default USB to USB - TCP/IP. You have to change it in both the Zaurus Manager (PC application) and on the Z (PC Link).

Thank You - WinSCP3 is a nice little app.  Is there any easy way to get internet connectivity on the Z under win2k?

Keola,
You need to know these things right now:

SL5600 only supports regular SD cards.  Not the faster newer types since it doesn\'t have the hardware builtin to work with those types.
You need to probably format your CF or SD card VFAT and as type FAT=16 for it to work properly when flashing.  The ZUG feed will give you ipk\'s and works great via a CF WIFI card.  Very easy to use once you have it up and running.  The 5600 has USB device but not host capability.  So it is treated as a device that your PC\'s host controller talks to.  It can\'t support another device by itself.  So don\'t by a CF USB device and expect the 5600 to control it.  It doesn\'t have the hardware builtin.  There is a CF based USB controller card but I haven\'t been to the site to see if any Zaurus drivers are available.  Last I heard there weren\'t.  What else?  Let\'s see:

Search the ZUG forums for topics about your interests.  Lot\'s of info stored there.  I\'d run the latest Sharp ROM 1.32, patch the kernel with the cache bug fixed, and add ipks from ZUG, Opie.handheld.org, or www.killefiz.de.  The pocketop keyboard works great with the fonts from www.currybrothers.com and the IRK preinstalled in the Sharp ROM.  Try out www.pocketworkstation.org too!  Don\'t get discouraged since the SL-5600 is in between the mass of development done on the SL-5000 or 5500 and the clamshell C[7-8]x0 types.  Our PDAs came out after the OZ developers switched to OE to bring about a much better build environment.  The 3.3.6pre1 was a kind gesture by them to help us out.  Also, 3.3.6pre1 was built with gcc3 instead of gcc2 so isn\'t compatible with alot of software in the feeds.  So, for your needs you will have to figure out which ROM supports what you really have to have.  I can\'t have what I want yet because no ROM supports all the options I\'d like yet for the 5600.  Hope this helps you a bit.  Take a look at this link:

http://cmisip.home.insightbb.com/index.htm

That will help you some.  If anyone wants to chime in and correct me where I am wrong, please do.

Just my experience, but I\'ve used FAT32 formatted CF cards (a bunch of different ones, one fancy one and the rest dreck) and have never had problems installing any IPK\'s.  Or using any other kind of data for that matter.  Same thing applies to SD cards, both 256Mb and 512mb.  And Microdrives (1gb IBM and 2.2Gb Magicstor).  Doing a NAND backup/restore is a different matter though, it\'s \"picky\".  My basic Sandisk worked well (256mb)

Back to the WinSCP3 comment. I just discovered that the tkcROM has samba server built in. So, when i have the Z attached via USB, and I\'m using TCP/IP over USB, then I can just map a drive to <ip-add-of-zaurus>. Then I have access to the SD and CF cards on my Windows desktop.

As for Internet connection. I haven\'t figure out how to do that on Windows 2000 via USB. However my laptop has a wired and wireless connection, and I have wireless for the Z. So, when I\'m using the laptop wired, I setup internet connection sharing with the wireless card and my Z can use that to get to the Internet.
