5600 processor question
« on: April 06, 2004, 11:49:35 am »
I\'ve been casually shopping for pda\'s for a few months.
The sl 5600  at Amazon looks like a good deal.

Questions:

There are some reviews around that sounds
like maybe those are being sold with a processor that
has a bug?

How long has the 5600 been around? Is it due to be
obsolited soon?

My understanding is that it is due to be \"obsoleted\" soon.  Try a similar search for SL-6000 on amazon.

Mine still works, though.

Some of the 5600s have the bug, some don\'t. The ones that don\'t use the pxa255 cpu and not the pxa250. There really isnt any way to tell which you will get though.

At $300 vs. $700, I can get two 5600\'s, one for me and one for my
computer geek son.   It would be a fancy toy for me and I guess
somewhat for him.  But if it\'s obsoleted soon,  would he be pitching it
soon?  He\'s in cs @ Purdue and pretty much has grafted his laptop
to the end of his wrist.  Would the 5600 be an asset for college course
stuff?

What  does the bug boil down to?  Does it have some small effect on
rare applications or is it a real pain everytime you turn the 5600 on?

I just got the 5600 last month. Yes, they are selling it cheap because the 6000 is just released. However, I find most of the stuff on this site, and a lot of other Z sites is still talking about the 5500. So I guess it depends on how cutting edge you want to be.

It depends on his style and preferences.  I don\'t think that I\'ll be pitching my Z-SL-5600 for quite a few years.  For such a small package, it seems to offer great processing speed, memory, and interfacing capabilities.

bought a 5600 from amazon with a cf camera card for 290$ including S/H and tax.  Used the default rom for a while and then replaced it with theKompany.rom and bought couple applications (such as theVideo player from theKompany), downloaded bunch of free programs (including python and JMaps) and it became a device that I am heavily depend on.  I am a software engineer myself and I think your son will like it too.   Buy one for yourself and one for your son, also consider purchasing a CF wireless card for him so he can use it for internet connection.
regards.

Basically the bug is in regards to the cache memory I believe which when disabled, has the processor running at a perceived slower speed - no cache slower reads/writes from external memory.  In one of the threads there are some links to Intel\'s site regarding the cache bug (#100 if I remember correctly).  I purchased my Zaurus from Amazon and was a bit bummed when I got the 250 processor but now its a dont care.  The device works as expected and all of my CF accessories are working the way I want them to. As a general engineering tool, the Zaurus should be quite nice.  A lot more flexibility then the other PDA\'s out there.  The down side is that you have to be willing to experiment and do some research in order to get some things to work.  For the most part, standard accessories will work fine, if however you have something that is new then there may not be a driver available for it.  Of course the same problem exists with other PDA\'s also - case in point, CF drivers for my Clie.

He has a Netgear brand  card for his laptop.  Don\'t know what model offhand but I think it\'s the 802.11b flavor.  Would that more than likely work in the 5600?

tnx,

Is it a compact flash?  Most of the notebook add ons would be PCMCIA I believe.  Off hand if it is compact flash then it probably will be compatible with minor configuration.
