Help! Japanese to English conversion of Zaurus Sl-c700
« on: April 09, 2004, 09:49:43 pm »
I just purchased a Zaurus SL-C700 but it is completely written in Japanese which I cannot completely understand! I\'ve read some articles in the web about Japanese to English conversion methods. But I am hesitant to try them because:
1. it might not work
2. I do not have any user\'s manual
3. I do not have a Installation CD
so if it won\'t work I do not have anything to reformat my Zaurus.
My recourse would be to stick to the Japanese format and learn Japanese! That would be difficult at first
Anyone have a guaranteed Japanese to English conversion method? Anyone has an English user\'s manual you can send to me via email?

Well, It\'s not hard just follow the instructions.  I would use the script to convert it.  You can always restore it from as NAND backup.  If you follow the instructions you don\'t run much risk of bricking it.
Much easier than learing japanese

It reloads the memory of the zaurus. You can save yours before you convert it , or download one.
To convert it, goto the how to\'s and follow the link, download the scrip to do it, install the script, done.
There is also on on doing a nand backup and restore. But that is where you can brick you zaurus.
I\'ve had mine for a month and have tried every OS by now, if you\'re a linux person allready pdaXrom is my favorite.

If you are a total newbie, a fresh install of a new ROM may be better, i.e. pdaXrom if you want to convert it into a Linux sub-notebook (cool) or Cacko\'s QT ROM if you want to keep the Qtopia environment and apps but loose the Japanese stuff.

There is a **risk** with NAND backup/restores, you won\'t know if it backed up properly until you try and restore it, if the restore does not work or fails, you *could* kill your machine.

Flashing a new ROM could be easier and safer.
Left Linux and Linux PDAs... sorry, got boring.  Switched to Mac.

white_angelbreath, I would also suggest simply flashing to a new ROM rather than doing a NAND restore.  AFAIK, the only NAND backup files out there are of some basic english roms with no hacks/bug fixes, etc.  You could flash to the new cacko qtopia ROM with ease, and you\'ll probably *really* like the ROM.

here\'s the link to the newest cacko qtopia rom thread

Also, unless you can read Japanese, then you don\'t need the manual, CD media, etc.

You can get the english intellesync installation software here (ZUG Downloads -] Modem Users -] Intellisync Software Folder).

You can get the newer USB drivers for the C series Z\'s [url=http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=getit&lid=199]here - (ZUG Downloads -] Packages -] Drivers -] Windows USB Drivers for SL-C7x0/8x0

I wasn\'t recomending to change  ROMs with a NAND restore, I was trying to say you can still save a system with a NAND restore if the conversion went badly.  Sorry to confuse.

Cory - that\'s a good point... probably best to have a NAND backup already downloaded and on your CF (if you have space) just in case.  Here\'s a link to some nand backup files courtesy of conics.net   (link also found in the ZUG How-To Docs area -] C7x0 ROMs -] NAND Flash Restore)

offroadgeek, im sorry i didn\'t do what you suggested, what i did was i followed an article in the net about Japanese conversion to English, it was successful.. I did convert most of the files and also hancomword. what i did was enter terminal and followed some of the codes posted in the net. i changed Language = ja to Language = en. But my problem now is that some are not totally converted to English. they are still in BOXES. I read that if you install Unicode font it will restore the language probably in English or Japanese without losing my English conversion. What shall i do? Shall i install it or there are other better ways?
I didn\'t do the ROM conversion because i just couldn\'t understand how to do it.. i\'m a total newbie
