PC connection not working with SL-5000D

Hi

I have got an SL-5000D and want to upgrade the ROM and install applications on it, but I can\'t get the PC to connect to the device. I\'ve tried both Zaurus File Transfer and the ROM upgrade command but they time out, even though the USB driver and USB network driver are installed properly.

I don\'t have a PC Sync application on the Zaurus so I don\'t know how I can check or change from USB serial to USB tcp/ip or vice versa.

I didn\'t have a CD with it, so I downloaded the latest package I could find - the v3 ROM upgrade and latest PC connection software.

I\'m not sure that you can use the usb connection upgrade to upgrade to the newer ROM, not least because I don\'t think it\'s designed for the 5000D (the ROM that is). If it is to work then you\'ll need to keep the old usb drivers so that the comms can work to get the image across (but again I don\'t think it will work).

Assuming I am right and that the new ROM isn\'t made for your 5000D I\'d go for something like OZ which is designed to work on the 5000D

What\'s OZ? and where I can get the old USB drivers?

OZ is OpenZaurus - www.openzaurus.org, you will need a CF card to flash with this (and most other ROMs).

The old USB drivers should be on the CD which came with your Z.

I didn\'t get a CD with my Zaurus, I bought it second hand. Is there somewhere to download them?

Try grabbing the CD update zip file from:

I presume that the drivers are also available on the ZUG downloads site.

I\'d say go with OpenZaurus as well.  I have used Intellisync 1.43 in order to sync with Microsoft Outlook.  After OZ is installed, there are a few little things that you need to take care of to get syncing to work.  Take a look at http://opie.handhelds.org/wiki/index.php/OpieSyncing for all of the details.  The solution works for syncing with the cradle, as well as wirelessly.

I don\'t care about syncing, I just want to get File Transfer working. Where can I get the USB drivers from the original SL-5000D disk?

If you\'re talking about the file transfer app then I\'m afraid it quite simply won\'t work unless you use a 3.xx Sharp ROM (or tkc ROM perhaps?) with the latest usb drivers and software. The point is that the ROM isn\'t designed for the 5000D (though there were attempts to get it working - try search).

There are other (nicer than the nasty Sharp application imho) methods of file transfer using either your current ROM or one of the others - sftp/scp, ftp, samba, etc.

With your current ROM there is an ftp server running on port 4242 for example.

You can get them from the link I gave above, or I think they are included in the sync applications which Greg2 pointed to in the second of his links.

I got ftp working, and copied the ospack to my CF card. But when I tried to reflash, the green and orange lights only came on for a brief moment.

So I might try one of the OZ ROMs instead.

I got OZ 3.2 installed, much nicer I have to say. Got FTP working again between the PC (Windows XP) and Zaurus over USB.

Successfully copied the files from www.mmhart.com for running UAE to the Zaurus, but got symlink errors when installing x11 ipkg. Seems to me that ln on OZ defaults to hard links that can\'t cross devices. Is there a way to make it default to soft links?

Also how come I can\'t press / on bootup to go straight to a prompt?

Is the card formatted as ext2? If not that\'ll be the problem.

Doesn\'t work that way with OZ. You could modify the /etc/init.d/opie script or just use the shutdown applet after Opie has started.

Glad you got it working anyway. BTW you can now use ssh/sftp/scp for comms rather than relying on telnet/ftp.
