I'm considering spinning up this distro again as a side project. How many folks are still active in the Zaurus community?

good to hear. I'd have to buy another on before I'd start dev... but I'd need more than 2 users :-D

Hi Late,

it would be good to have a distribution that can run from NAND again, like pdaXrom.

As you know I work on ArchLinuxARM.

It is versatile and very up to date, but is too heavy for running from NAND, but it has huge repo with up to date packages.

Also it lacks C1000 support as I do not have one to develop a kernel and kexecboot for it.

OE/Angstrom still releases automated builds but no one has tested them AFAIK.

Some time ago I thought about spinning a "new" distribution based on Alpine Linux.

Alpine is based on musl and openrc and it would fit on NAND, as it is very memory efficient and similar to Arch in use.

Sadly Alpine has no arm5tel port/repo and it would mean a lot of work, compiling packages, but these could be Zaurus optimized - still a lot of work for just a handful of users.

Do you want to build a new release for pdaXrom from scratch or just update some parts of the latest release ? The gcc3 compilers may be too old to compile new packages.

If you really want to go down that track of reviving pdaXrom, I am happy to test and may even contribute.

Join #ALARMZ on freenode if you like. There are not many Z users left.

Cheers!

Hello,
I'm here too. I can test the ROM on the 760/860 series and on a 'regular' C3000 as well.

Thank you!!!

edit: It's funny that there's Pandora, Ryra at the door and the WIN available and nothing comes close to the good old Zaurus. (-:

Hi InSearchOf, glad to hear that you're planning to resume PdaXROM. It was my favourite distro back in the days (heck, even now I'm still daily on the #pdaxrom IRC channel, just in case someone else joins in too . Sadly at some point I had to ditch it since it didn't support SD cards bigger than 2GB.

Nowadays we are very few Zaurus users left, so maybe it could be a good idea to collaborate with greguu (and/or any other developer willing to help) to develop a single, up-to-date distro, either based on Arch Linux or any other distro. My ideal distro would be one with an usable X11/window manager (as PdaXROM), a recent kernel, support for SDHC/SDXC cards, charging and suspend/resume. I'm not interested in installing it on the NAND, it would be handy to boot from it but I'm afraid to wear it out by reaching its read/write cycle limits.

Well, it remains to be seen if the Pyra will have the same production/shipping problems as its predecessor, and regarding the GPDWin it is still unknown how well will it run Linux...

I might be interested as I could test on my C1000 or C860. My 3200 would be off limits though as I have Pdaxii13 perfectly tweaked on it.
I think I'm coming down with what kahm's got!  I now have 3 Zaurii in house!  ;)

I use C1000 and C3200 from time to time. And I'm glad to know that I'm not alone.

Hello to all!

I'm still here too (with near no free time) and my C3000 still boots Arch, Cacko and pdaXii13 beta3 from time to time...

Glad to read i'm not alone
