CF Ethernet card
« on: November 04, 2003, 10:31:57 am »
I\'m just about to buy a Z-5600, got a nice price on it ($408 @ beachcamera.com) but I\'m looking to enhance connectivity; I want to buy a CF Ethernet card along with my Zaurus. Any suggestions, and where I could order it, of cards that are compatible?  I found one on myzaurus.com, the Socket CF Ethernet card. Does anyone know anything ybout that? Any good or bad expieriences?
Thanks a bunch
Yack

I have a Zaurus SL5500, running the 3.10 US ROM after replacing the original 2.38 UK one (Pretty similar to the system you are running). Soon after purchasing it I added a Linksys WCF12 compactflash wireless lan card. This was instantly recognised, and set up easily via Settings/Network tool. I also purchased a Netgear Wireless Access Point, and now I can wander around my home, Zaurus in hand, reading emails/web-browsing/copying files to-and-from my pcs/etc. This is a lot more convenient than having it stuck at the end of an ethernet cable. I\'ve even used the Zaurus on my home network from the park outside my home, 200m away.

My advice would be to save up a bit more, and get WLAN CF card and Wireless Access Point. You can use WEP encryption to stop casual war-walking hackers, or a full firewall-mac address set-up if you\'re security-mad. I highly recommend the Linksys WCF12
if you go ahead with this idea.

We have used the Ruggidized Socket Cards. Work fine with the Zaurus SL-C7xx/860 so I would assume it would be ok with the 5500 as well.

Plugged in, added lan card in network (auto everything) and off it went.

One of our customers needed fixed IP etc. but had no problems either.

Hope that helps.

Yep, the Hawking card worked right out of the box on the SL5600 original Sharp ROM.

I had to edit /etc/pcmcia/config for the Sharp 3.10 ROM in order to get it to recognize this card, but once I added an entry for it, it works perfectly.
