c700 or c860/760

hi all, I must choose between a c860/760 or a c700, the last being very cheap, just 399 usd vs 650-730 usd.

Does the hardware of 760/860 worth the money?

You may get extra performance (with video for example) with 860 or 760 because they have faster bus speed if I remember correctly, the C700 also has half the RAM and Flash drive space. Also a PXA250 CPU which has a bug with a speed issue.  A newer ROM would fix it.

Want do you want to do with it?

I imagine the C700 will be a bit slower, but not enough to worry about, it\'s still a 400Mhz processor and a new ROM like the Cacko QT ROM will definately help.

In the same way that I can fix a hole in my roof with a couple of bin bags ;-) They may hold, but they may give way.

I\'d go for a C750, I\'d steer clear of the C700 as it has less RAM and a slower processor (bus speed issue - related to the bug?)

The C750 can also use the large battery from the 760 without any modifications. On the 700 you need to grind down the battery to make it fit

Also you might only want to buy used ones but the C700 and C760 are not sold in Japan anymore whcih means dynamism, shirtpocket etc. don\'t import new ones... the C700 has PXA 250 400 Mhz processor and the C750 and up has PXA 255 400mhz processor and as everyone said the c700 adn c750 have lower memory than c760 and c860...

ok, let\'s keep out of the game the c700 (even if it is powered by the step C of the pxa250, that is the one without bug - with the software fix you actually disable the software patch they made to override the pxa250 bug you could find till step .

The c750 has half the rom and half the battery than c760/c860. But buying the battery means something like 100usd more (yes, you keep the slim one....), and you have 64 Mb less of flash... that is the value of a 64Mb sd card, we can say. That\'s 30 usd more.

So, if the c760 cost only 130usd more than a c750, maybe I should prefer the first (yes, if you buy the bigger battery you keep the smaller one, but, according to me, this \"plus\" is balanced by the fact that 64Mb of flash directly onboard sound more tasty than external cards  ).

Another point: can you decide to use part of the flash like ram? If so, buying the c700 with a 512Mb sd and using a pxa250-patched kernel would be not so bad.

------little ot: I saw my friends with ipaqs turning off and on their pda without loss of time and data (thanks to flash memory that is not volatile). But zaurus pdas have sdram, that is volatile. Does it mean that turning off and on the pda is not as fast and painless as on ipaqs?-------------

It seems virtually instant switching on, same for turning off, at most within a second, is it an issue for you?

A friend of mine is saving for a 2nd user C700, the CPU bug is not a real problem AFAIK or issue. A C750 would be better.

I went for the C860 instead of the C760 purely for aesthetics, I like the appearance of the C700 and C860, all silver. The white of the C760 didn\'t look as nice to me.

As for internal user flash vs. external, you are probably right.  But a little tweeking can address memory limitations, ie. swap etc.  I have a 512MB CF for data, music and video etc and I have a 64MB MMC for a 32MB swapfile and temp files.

You could create a swap file, but it would be fairly slow as SD writes/reads are orders of magnitude slower than RAM writes/reads.

By turn off do you mean whip the battery out? If so then no the Z won\'t do this - your data will survive but the working memory will be wiped. If you just mean switching off (suspending) then they are exactly the same (I don\'t that iPAQs have flash memory - or any other type of RAM which doesn\'t need to be powered to retain its state - instead of RAM, I think they have both RAM and Flash just like the Cxxx/sl5600), the contents of the RAM are powered/refreshed and therefore remain intact while the unit is \'switched off\'.

you answered me: simply the sdram is powered during suspend. This mean that the battery goes out while the zaurus (as other pda, if I undestood) is suspended.

How much time does the battery last in suspended mode?

And what are the boot and the power-off time of various rom? - I mean the time to effectively turn on and off, so that you don\'t need ram being powered.

Most recent Pocket PC PDAs have some small amount of flash memory available for user (5-10 Mb). The rest of the memory is pure SDRAM, which is split dynamicaly between running programs and storage. Similar to SL-5500 layout but not fixed.
