New Android update available
« on: May 18, 2018, 08:37:51 am »
(News via @GeminiPDA channel on Telegram)
A new update for Android has been released by Planet. Two separate updates are available, one for x25 and another for x27 CPU users. It's being released via OTA for Android only devices or via the flash tool for dual boot users. No details about the contents of the update are available yet.

Has anyone managed to download this? It seems to start for me, but the thing I presume is a progress bar at the bottom of the page doesn't show any progress at all.

I'm getting an error message, "Connect to the server is unusual, please try again"!

It downloaded and installed fine for me (X25 version on Android only device). It did have quite bad (suspiciously bad even) grammar in its messages, so potentially originates from MediaTek instead of Planet Computers.

Not obvious what it has changed.

Downloaded and installed on my X27. No idea what was in it though. Just got a message saying it had succeeded.

Top tip.  Don't try to apply the Android OTA update to a dual boot Gemini.  It restarts as expected but fails with an error and a picture of a poor, sickly droid lying on its back.

Which I suppose means I'll have to reflash the thing if I want to get the android update which will mean spending another evening getting the phone back to working how I want it to work.

Which is a right old faff TBH.

I noticed a difference: correct device serial number is shown, not 0123456789ABCDEF

I have a dual boot system with TWRP. I did the OTA without thinking. Now all it will do is re-boot into TWRP and I can't re-flash. The re-flash tool won't pick up the gemini on reboot before it goes into TWRP. Any suggestions?

Single boot Android.  Downloaded in under 30 seconds, took about 2 minutes to install & reboot & finish.  When it was done it went to a black screen - momentarily fear of bricking - pushing the Esc/On button brought up my login screen.  All is well.

I wish these came with a documentation sheet stating what has been changed.

Disregard....I managed to get it to flash. Has anyone located the OTA file download link so we can manually update (those with a dual boot system)?

Thanks

John

It could be security (spectre) related, and/or performance. I just reran geekbech4 and got 5064 (previous 47xx). It could just be that I benchmarked after a reboot or that there are some real perfomance upgrades.

I should mention that I used to consistently get 47xx from geekbench4, now 50xx

I got the same issues with the rooted firmware (no dual boot).

The current (11/05/2018) download links for the Dual boot system have the OTA update already.

Other changes (on my first-run x25 Gemini):

* Hitting enter (instead of space) after unlocking with PIN now works

* There's a "Gemini settings" submenu in Settings: currently it gives options to show app bar on Open (lid, I assume), go to desktop on open, and answer calls in speakerphone mode.

* Version number is still 7.1.1 and Android security patch level is 5 February 2018.

* Firmware Update still comes up in portrait, but seems (?) to have slightly better localized English text.

Anyone else see anything that's changed?
