Android update - Beware!

Hi,

I just received an OTA update on my Gemini. So tried to install it and it failed somehow.
Beware and do some proper backup before that! In my case it killed my Gemini unit! It is now stucked on boot animation.

I just wrote to Planet for info and will try probably reflash few hours later. (Which will be pain, because I will have to set whole android and all apps again)

Just wanted to warn other users. That's why I am posting this.

Hello and Thank you for sharing this, I will heed this as well. I also posted recently re: my Gemini being stuck in a boot animation. Mine happened as I was getting some erratic behavior, getting error message "MediaTek has stopped working" -- I will not try to restart again when that happens as it has frozen my Gemini.

Any advice on few backup options? Cloud-based, App-based? Other? Thank you :-)

This is concerning.

Any quick tips on how to disable Over-The-Air updates so we don't get bricked? (Or can you simply refuse to install it?)

Appreciate any replies on this.

Just dismiss the notification when it comes up. That's all.

Unfortunately I do not know any way on Android how to do proper backup (for me that means system and apps settings) if you do not have root.
Maybe this: http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-b...up-without-root
But you need rooted Android to make restore...

If you have rooted image, then TitaniumBackup is definitely a way to go.

I had the same issue. Installed the OTA update on a pristine Android, and it gave me the endless boot animation. Had to reflash Android, so starting from scratch now, which is a drag

I just did the OTA update - not a problem. Not sure the difference but mine worked fine.

Not much concerning. In the end it is your choice if you will apply the update or not. And there all at least 2 warning screens before you apply that OTA. Well but in my case curiosity was stronger...

Just wait till there will be some info from Planet. They might have some solution whithout need to reflash. (I can imagine update.zip on sdcard might solve this - I can still boot into recovery and select to apply update from sdcard)



Just for info. I have X27 Gemini. Anyone with working OTA can tell if he has X25 or X27?

Hi -- THANKS! Just for me, coming from Apple where the backup is so simple via iOS and with no worries. I know with Android, everything is app-based, not so much Google-based as far as similar to having a ClusterFracas-free backup/restore functionality. I am hopeful to find that similar/easy to use system on Android. I don't use the root methods, perhaps I am over-thinking, but just don't have the time to tinker like I used to in the old days, before kids :-)

I am still stuck in BOOT-LOOP mode for now as I am pondering doing a Hard-reset.

Thoughts?

Are you rooted? If so, just download TitaniumBackup or another similar program and freeze the system app called WirelessUpdate 4.5.3

Maybe it is an x25/x27 thing. I updated straight away and all is fine. I have an original (serial number < 10) x25 gemini.

From what I read, one of the fixes was the LEDison app which allows you to assign light sequences to contacts. I'm guessing the update was in the apk and not at the firmware level.

Could you extract and upload that for the rest of us?
