Film on new cosmo screen
« on: November 23, 2019, 04:52:25 pm »
I just received my indigogo cosmo yesterday. While unpacking I removed the usual film covering the screen from external display, and then headed up to do the same with main screen, but found that the film covering it does not have the usual ear tab for pulling it off. I also not able to peel it with finger nail.

Then my wife suggested - maybe it is not supposed to be removed, maybe it is part of screen, or maybe it is a screen protector. That suggestion stopped me from using more radical tool for removing the film.

So here is the question to new cosmo owners - or maybe to manufacturer: is the film on main screen of new cosmo is supposed to be removed? Did any new owner already removed that film?

Kind of stupid problem, but had to ask..

Gemini had the same thing. I emailed planet, and they said it was a screen protector mainly for transit. Half of them (planet staff using geminis) kept it on, half peeled it off. At the time I tried to peel it off and couldn't, so I left it for about a year. One corner started to lift, so I then peeled it off.

Check out the gemini forum - people were wondering the same thing with the gemini

Thanks for reassuring reply. After using it for one day with film on I decided that the film gives somewhat dull look to the screen. So this evening I went ahead and used exacto knife to lift the film in the corner and then peeled it off. The glass without film looks much nicer to me.

I've left mine on for the time being.  I don't mind how it looks, though I imagine the screen contrast will be a bit better without it.  I figure whenever the wear on the plastic gets annoying or it starts to peel off on its own, I'll get rid of it.  Hopefully it will extend the life of the "scratch-resistant" glass for however long the plastic film lasts.

I wonder how long it will take before the keyboard keys, with the screen touching them every open/close cycle, will start to wear into the glass?  Plus side, I don't yet see any key wear on the plastic.

Any high-mileage Gemini folks out there whose device saw wear and tear on the glass?

If I recall, I removed the protector on my Gemini using a blob of Blu Tack to lift a corner.  (Blu Tack is extremely versatile stuff!  It's also great for cleaning dust and debris out of awkward places or from clothing, safely removing keys from Psion and Gemini keyboards, exercising the fingers and as a fidget toy…  Other putty-like adhesives are available, of course.)

Now my Cosmo has arrived (yay!), I can confirm that that method does NOT work…

A fingernail on the corner worked for me — but it took a large number of attempts over a few minutes before the separator started to come away.

And it may depend on the exact placement of the protector; in my case, there was a mm or so gap between the protector and the RHS of the screen.  It'd probably be harder If there's no clearance.

question...
i removed the film from the screen but the touchscreen responsiveness is pretty bad... is this typical Cosmo?
On my Sony and Apple the responce is way better somehow.
i hope that i missed a setting for responsiveness because scrolling is not working need to scroll with keyboard.

Try restarting - the responsiveness of the screen sans film is about the same as my Note 8 was.

I'd personally recommend removing the film - the screen looks a lot nicer without it.
