So is this a deal, or is there an issue with transcend\'s CF cards ?

For about 30-50 more bucks you can get a 4.4 gig mp3 player and take out the microdrive...unless you the cf card then that\'s a good price.

I just bought a MagicStor 2.2 GB CF for $179, but it had bad sectors and I\'m in the process of returning it.  Personally, although it costs more, I would stick with the \"solid state\" CF cards (instead of the \"Microdrive\" CF cards).  (The difference, of course, being that the \"microdrives\" have moving parts and sooner or later (like with all harddrives) will start to develop bad sectors, but the \"solid state\" will last forever).

I bought a $330 Sandisk 2 GB solid state CF card ...which is almost exactly twice as much, but it has advantages:
* Faster
* More shock resistant
* Lasts forever (I still have a 16 MB CF from many years ago, and I\'m sure everyone out there has 1 or 2 of them as well).
* CF Type I instead of Type II (thinner card) (This is good because not everything out there supports the larger Type II cards)
* Requires less power (won\'t drain your batteries as fast)
* No spin-up time needed (faster \"instant access\" to your data).

...I\'m sure I could think of other things as well...

Thanks coolass ... I presume I won\'t have to get out the soldering iron to remove the cf then ? Does it just snap out ?

Yep and if you google \"muvo microdrive\" you can find out how to use a low capacity cf card to replace the drive if you still want to use the mp3 player.

A tiny bit off this post but some cf card company introduced a 12 gigabyte cf card for a low price of $9999.00!!!!!!!!!! not !!! but I guess they\'re still working on it to make it cheaper.

\"Solid State\" or \"Microdrive\" (is it a memory chip or a harddrive)?

They do break eventually.

Have you ever known one to break?  (Other than physically getting broken in some accident or something... or blown out through electrical discharge... or smoking PDAs  ).  I\'ve never heard of one breaking before.  I\'ve *have* heard of some that were defective when they were bought, much like defective memory, but I\'ve never heard of one that eventually stopped working on its own.

I have heard of bad CF and bad microdrives out fo the box....but have never heard of wither one dying ince it passes the 9 month mark.

Thing is Z\'s CAN handle the 4 gb thicker cards, and I think spin-up and bettery usage are minimal with anyone with the bigger battery.  4GB is ALOT of disk for $200++ bucks and if you want to find one then search fo \"muvo 4gb\" on ebay and you will find plenty.  Finding the Muvo retail is near impossible and right now the muvo microdrive snaps out (but void warranty)...I seriously doubt this will last too much longer....the IPOD mini doenst work this way and I think next gen creatives will not either IMHO. Businesses always seem to try to kill hacks....Remember the 4GB micrdrives generally go for 500+, so this is a major steal.
