This is so frustrating.  I have purchased two different mpeg4 play back programs and both display the video out of sync with the audio.  I just don\'t get it.  About 2 months ago, everything was working just fine in tkcVideo.  I record tv shows using showshifter into mpeg4 320x240 format.  I then use virtualdub to transcode to 160x120 with 24bit mono mp3 sound.  I am using the divx5 pro codec.

I have a video that I did this with 2 months ago that still works fine with no video/audio sync problems.  Now, when I use the same technique to encode new videos, I have sync problems.  I thought it might have been tkcVideo so I dropped 18 bucks on DrZ just to see if it might make a difference.  DrZero difference.  All of the videos seem to play fine on my computer, but on the zaurus, the audio and video is out of sync.  Has anyone created a faq for encoding from an mpeg4 source taken from television?  I am not interested in ripping and encoding dvds.  I just want to transcode my files that are already in mpeg4 format and play them with audio and video synced on the zaurus.

I looked at the file information in virtualdub for the file that is not having problems with syncing and then compared it to a file that is having sync problems and the specs are identical.

I have been using mythtv to record tv shows and nuvexport to transcode to ogm files for playback on the zaurus.  I have to use a constant audio delay value to sync the audio and video streams.  It is a linux solution.  If you are interested :

Joshp has reported that he is running into audio video sync issues after 10 minutes of playback. I have not run into this problem.  If you do try this, I would be interested to know how it works for you.

DrZ and tkcVideo, mpeg4 transcoding and out of sync audio.

I was just able to encode an mpeg4 file with audio and video synced properly.  I think it has something to do with using the divx pro codec but I am not completely sure of this.  For all of the files that I have gotten to transcode successfully with no sync problems, the original files are known to have been recorded using the standard divx codec, NOT the pro version.

I have been recording shows off of television using showshifter.  I am not sure of this but I think that for the files that were recorded using the \"divx tv standard\" setting, I don\'t get sync problems.  Over the passed few weeks, I have been messing with the compression settings in showshifter and I think that is why I have been having the sync problems.  I successfully encoded a file today that was recorded before I started changing the compression settings in showshifter.  This morning, I reset the compression settings in showshifter back to \"divx tv standard\" and I am recording a show today.  I will attempt to transcode it later today and post my results.

Can anyone else verify that using the divx PRO codec can result in transcoded files being out of sync?

Whenever I have used the divx standard (not PRO) codec to record from tv using showshifter (divx tv standard compression) and then transcoded that file using the divx standard codec with virtualdub, the audio is synced properly.

On a side note, tkcVideo seems to play the synced files much smoother than DrZ.

I successfully transcoded a file that I recorded from tv yesterday.  It seems like divx Pro has something to do with the audio and video being out of sync.  Using divx standard results in a file that is nearly in sync but still slightly off  but not nearly as bad as when I used divx pro.

I think it is slightly off because showshifter is recording it slightly off, the slight sync problem is not a result of the transcode i dont think.
