Roms? Feeds? I\'m a confused new guy with a 5500
« on: May 13, 2004, 09:44:18 pm »
Howdy Folks.

I just got a 5500 used from a co-worker, It came with Sharp 3.10 and I upgraded it to Sharp 3.13.

I\'m confused as how to add files, what feeds there are and what I should do with them and what the differences between roms are.

Is there some sort of matrix showing the differences between the various roms showing things such as applications, last update date, kernel/driver support?

I want to use my 5500 for a number of things:

Address book
Calendar
To-Do List
Note pad
E-Mail (IMAP preferred as my inbox is over 1K messages in size)
AOL Instant messenger
Video Watching (Is it possible to carry a TV show or two around with me when I\'m waiting to do stuff?)
VOIP connectivity at the office
WIFI Network locating (For when I\'m away from the office and home)
Gaming (I hear MAME is available, Does it run well on the 5500 for simple games?)

I hate to follow up my own posts but I\'ve learned a lot through trial and error in the last two days.

I\'ve picked a Rom, OpenZaurus 3.3.6Pre1 split 40/24.
I\'ve found a AIM client that works with it (GAIM)
I\'ve got a video I\'m able to play with OpieMediaPlayer2 (I\'ve not yet tried other formats than a simple MPEG)

Openzaurus is a nice choice! You can also try mplayer+xmms+mplayer plugin for xmms to play divx etc.
For the openzaurus 3.3.6-pre1 you there is a lot of software, but some will run after you link them with old libs by using the compat-libs. Please search for further information about compat-libs. I think there should be a lot of threads. For Pim you can synchronize Openzaurus with Evolution on Linux machines by using multisync. It works fine. About email I cant provide you with help, because I dont use email on Zaurus. WIFI Network locating I think you can use a tool named wellenreiter, but I am not sure about that (I dont have WLAN). With a little work you can also get Hancomoffice running on openzaurus.
Game: I love to play mahjonng on the Zaurus.
Cheers,
Sam
