Installing Just a Kernel
« on: November 22, 2003, 03:01:25 am »
I have a SL-C760 and would like to install a Sukoshi kernel I downloaded. I have sucessfully installed Sash\'s system and 96MB mod, so have some experience. However, I can\'t find instructions for just installing the kernel. Is it the CD trick? Do I need a file other than the zImage file on my CF card?

Bonus points for pointing me toward a kernel that works well with Sash\'s ROM that will get rid of the constant \"low signal\" errors I get from my Socket low power WiFi card :-)

Thanks in advance!

the downloaded sukoshi kernel should be named initrid.bin right?

well, take that file and JUST that file and put it in your CF root directory like you would if you were flashing a ROM.

do the OK + power trick like you would to flash a ROM, but this time it will only flash the kernel.

good luck!

wait..

you might need the updater.sh file. I\'m not sure.. but just add that in the root directory of your CF card too.

just download C7x0 Custom ROM (cacko) v1.18, unzip it and take the updater.sh from there.

note: this will work on the 700/750/760... I don\'t think it will work with the 860.

I got the file here:  zug downloads ] roms ] cacko

Is this also true for the SL-5500 and SL-5600?  Just place the kernel on CF with a ROM, and the kernel will upgrade without losing any ROM added programs/changes?  Thanks!

For the 5500/5000D just place the zImage file, which is the kernel (it\'s probably different on the c7xx machines) on the CF card and do the normal C & D & hard reset.

Of course make sure you have the correct kernel modules on your Z otherwise you\'ll have to reflash another disk image (initrd.bin) to get past the startup screen.

I know nothing about the 5600.

P.S. This shouldn\'t be posted in here, you should post in the 5x00 section.

HELP!  I followed these instructions and I think I have bricked my Z!  It is an 860 with the tkc rom.  After I installed the new kernel (which appeared to go OK) my Z does not power on AT ALL!  The battery light comes on when I first plug it in, but otherwise NADA!

Any suggestions?

Fixed it!  For future reference: remove the battery and leave the unit completely unpowered for about an hour.  The power on again. In this case I did one of the d+ combos to boot to single user mode, but who knows what else would have worked.
