Playing VGA movies in my zaurus (with kino2 and dr.z)
« on: May 23, 2004, 11:11:55 am »
I am not a native user of english, So my english is poor. sorry for misspell or grammatical error.

Zaurus have nice LCD, that is one of the best LCD in the small device. But almost everyone didn`t use this excellent lcd well, everyone is satisfied with qvga movie play. But this well-made LCD that had VGA resolution(640*480) and nice hardware device is too good to give up playing VGA movie. So I tested playing VGA movies in the two programs (dr.z and kino2). Dr.z is to slow to play vga movie. Almost one per two frames are dropped. And kino2 is more slow..

But I found one interesting thing. Kino2 can play 640*360 (widescreen) movie in rotate mode(yes, tested movie is already rotated. so movie`s resolution is 360*640) with overay and dubblebuffrering. Divx or mpeg4 movie have some problem with sound sync, so I use mpeg2 movie. (my zaurus model is sl-c860)

following is testing sample movie. this file is very big (about 80 MB) so  if your internet connection speed isn`t good, I recommend you don`t download this sample.

 kino playing sample

drz playing sample

So I thinked that kino could playing vga movie also, so I make rotated vga files. But kino couldn`t play full vga movie. screen image is broken (filled with green bar like ====) So I stopped test and post this misterious situation in zug.

Sigmarion3(HPC with pxa255 and imageon 3220) and Nexio155s(HPC with pxa250 and no image accelerator)can play VGA movie in BETA player. Framedrop is very few... Yes, problem is software, not hardware.

Zaurus C9x0 series maybe realease in next month(in japan). That`s hardware spec (predicted.. ) is very good (maybe pax270 634mhz and 128 or 256mb internal rom, some good graphic procceser with wi-fi). But software will not support well, zaurus`s hardware spec is like garbage...

I wish cacko team or someone else make nice program to play vga movie. but many of zaurus user didn`t feel necessity of vga..

have a nice day. and sorry for my poor english.. T.T[/img]

You cannot play 640x480 movies on a Z, it cannot do it at all.  To get this in perspective, I can **barely** play 720x576 on a 800Mhz PC, even then with severe frame dropping.  320x240 (half the display of a Z) is optimal, by that I mean it is possible to have full framerate and more natural movement in action scenes, provided you use the correct container format and codecs encoded optimally. You may find you can get higher resolutions but you will end up with lower quality overall. I have seen a number of portable DVD devices which do not really have 720x576 pixel LCD screens.  The fact is on a 3 inch screen, you simply do not need anything above 320x240, unless you are trying to destroy your eyesight by sitting 6 inches from the Z\'s screen. If you are good at encoding with mencoder (forget it on Windows) you can get excellent movies on Kino2 (which is mplayer), you just need to encode better, not increase the resolution.
Left Linux and Linux PDAs... sorry, got boring.  Switched to Mac.

sorry noirkura, but this post is really too hard to believe...
1) if you own a sl-c860, why would you need to rotate the video in order to view it landscape? Every rom can display landscape mode... the sl serie is made for it...
2) a strong arm 400mhz is not powerfull enough for mpg2 640*360 movie. Are you sure you didn\'t mean mpg1?
3) what codec do you use for sound?

I\'m not saying that you are lying but i\'m _VERY_ sceptical about this post...
But if it was true, that would be a great thing!!!

hmm..
I don`t now why I need to roatate my Z to play this videos... but in non-rotate mode, playing performance is very poor It`s also very misterious situation.. for me. if you want to play this mpg2 movie in your Z, I uploaded this movie and you can play this movie in your Z. Mpeg2 1500kbps, and sound is mpeg layer2 128 kbit/s 44100hz. hmm.. and kino`s sound decoder is mad (but ffmpeg also can play well)

 http://user.chollian.net/~gogojili/doitnow.mpg

padishah_emperor I saw that someone play 640X480 movie in the another portable device, (yes, sigmarion3.) that`s spec is as same as Z (but gpu is better that include imageon 3220) And I can play 640X480 divx movie in 300mhz personal computer. Storng arm 400mhz is enough for VGA movie, As I posted, Sigmarion3(NTT docomo) and NEXIO(samsung) can play vga divx movie(with beta player)
http://cafefiles.naver.net/data4/2004/5/19...25/CAPT0004.jpg that`s nexio`s playng sample picture. IDCT engine and some accelerater in imageon is not a trinketry...

yes, you are right padishah_emperor. If I satisfied QVGA movie, I can play full frame movie with less dropped frame. But, I think that is like a explain yourself for self-satisfaction.

Not for playing VGA movie, rotating can fix slow performence of kino`s scaling (yes, we played in \"\"Real\"\" QVGA mode). this misterious situation is not only to play vga, padishah_emperor, It also for playing QVGA movie.

I must go to my school. have a nice day ♡

argh!  If this is true.... faster CPU will finally place mame .. and built in wifi will free my CF slot.
I will have to buy... immediately!

Scott
ps: if this is the case, I will have a c700 and/or c760 to sell -- anyone thinking about 700 or 760 in the
future, drop me a note on here... and if/when the 760 is available, we\'ll do the two step.

padishah_emperor.. I just wonder what type CPU of your 800mhz desktop... If it is not a crusoe CPU, your desktop can playing HD movie.... (I played HD(1920*1080i) movie in P3-500mhz(with half speed 512kb cash mem)with sasem HDeditor with DXVA)... If you use intel or AMD`s desktop cpu, you have some problem with your desktop computer(just my thinking)
I`m not sure zaurus 9X0 series will realease in next month, That just rumor (but slightly believable) from Japanese forum about Zaurus. But most of these rumor says new Z series realease in next month or next but one month.
 Have A nice day.. ^^

That was Scott quoting noirkura\'s first post and I believe a little was lost in the translation.

Both fps and bitrate are important. But if I must choose one, I think fps is more important than bitrate.
