More news about C960 ?
« on: May 26, 2004, 10:59:43 am »
Seems to be something new on this page, as of 5/19, but I can\'t get the translation to work using either Excite or Altavista.  Any Japanese readers know what this is about?

http://www.zaurusian.net/bbs/view.php?id=news&no=252

Here\'s one of the parts I can read.

] SL-C960
>CPU:PXA270(最大624MHz)
>MEMORY:64MB
>FLASHMEMORY:128&256MB

Hmm, seems I might eventually be tempted by the dark side myself.

Hmm, I was able to get some parts of the page translated with worldlingo.com.  Still doesn\'t make that much sense though...

This looks like a repost to a Korean discussion forum of quotes from a pair of Japanese weblogs.  The news item for the first one has scrolled off the end of the page, there isn\'t a history link, and the Google cache is too recent also, so I don\'t know the full context.  Judging from what was quoted and a later post, it looks like he\'s summarizing speculations gathered from other forums on what will be in the next Zaurus model, and guessing at a model number for it.

In the second weblog, the author lists the PDA models he currently owns, and says that although he\'s trying to reduce the number, he plans on buying a few more in the coming months; among this second list is the SL-C960, expected around the end of June.  A few days later, he\'s noting that his site is getting lots of hits from Chinese and French sites which seem to be pointing at his log and saying \"look, the SL-C960 is apparently coming out in June!\"  This has him a bit worried because the date and model number were speculation on his part, so he\'s fervently hoping that it does come out then so he doesn\'t get labeled as a liar worldwide.

So basically, there\'s widespread consensus on what the next Zaurus model number and specs should be, but I have yet to see even a fragment of official news on what/when it actually will be.

The only site that has had any data on the 960 is the http://pda.cocolog-nifty.com/hana/pda/ site and he keeps changing between calling it C960 and C970, all the other sites that reference seem to link to the first site.

The korean site seems to be quoting the specs for the dell pda on jmbowman7s first weblog.

As per jmbowman i\'ve heard nothing and been able to find nothing from the Sharp Japan\'s site and none of the Otaku (Japanese Geeks) that I know have heard anything about it either - vapourware? I hope not but...

Good Lord!  I\'ve only recently got my 860, I don\'t think I\'d get another one just yet even if it made my breakfast in the morning and wiped my bottom for me, maybe a year or two.. or five.. I want the kind of lifespan from my Z that I got from my 200LX.  I\'ll certainly take a look at it though if and when it comes out.  You could drive yourself insane paying too much heed to gossip, when I see a picture on the front page of ZUG, then I\'ll worry about it.
Left Linux and Linux PDAs... sorry, got boring.  Switched to Mac.

true.... I\'m hoping for 128mb ram and min 800mhz cpu... 650 is good...

I\'m not hoping for this in the 960 -- but I\'m saying, when these specs come out -- I\'ll upgrade my 700 ...

Talked to our Japanese contacts again (they talked to their Sharp Contacts...)

And the latest info. according to them is. In confidence, no gurantee but ... :

The leak are due to misinterpretation and new clamshells are planned by Sharp but are still in prototype stage. Not expecting new models to be released unitl end of the year.

How accurate, who knows. But we intend to keep getting units in on a regular basis based on this & the fact that there does not appear to be any \'Real\' info out there.

Based on the timetables for the C700 thru C860 series, I wouldn\'t expect any new clamshells till the end of the year at the *very* earliest. After all, the C860 has been out only about 6 months.

And, considering how much improvement went into the early changes & releases in the C7x0s, probably later rather than sooner for any significant improvements ti the more mature C860.

Of course, if I\'m wrong, I will have no choice except to \"punish\" myself by buying one of the new clamshells right away. <G>.

Go ahead, Sharp Japan! Make me a liar! <G>.

I dunno. For the purpose of a timeline, I\'d consider the 760 and the 860 to be the same product since it was really just a software update and repacking of an already existing device.

There may actually be some new products announced in June/July. Sharp has consistently announced new Zaurus models twice a year (June/July, Nov/Dec) since their first one back in \'94.

That could be wrong kenroy because the SL-C860 has been a great hit in Japan and they might keep on selling it until the end of the year.
I could and probably be wrong though
