How to SSH or Samba in 5600
« on: May 28, 2004, 12:55:13 pm »
Hi
I am an absolute novice and would like some detailed help on this. I want to access and transfer files from my SL5600 (Sharp ROM 1.32) to my PC (Win XP Pro). From these forums I gathered that this could be done by using SSH or Samba. Unfortunately I couldn\'t get either to work. Could someone please point me to a set of instructions suited for dummies &/or idiots?
Thanks

install the software( that came with you Z ) on your computer and when you put the Z in the cradle, it\'ll connect to the PC( with samba ) so that it looks like a disk drive to your PC.

you don\'t need to get under-the-hood to do this. The 5600 ships from the factory with this capability.

I\'m running WinXP Pro at the office.  I have the USB cradle configured to use IP for synching.  When I put the Z in the cradle, I can use Windows Explorer to mount the Zaurus as my Z: drive.  I have to refer to the IP address that\'s assigned with the synch setup and the mount point, is I think, /home.

The other option is the Zaurus File Manager software that comes with the Z.  With it, you can drag and drop files to/from your Z to you Windows box - but mounting it as a drive is much nicer.

wizzard,

Have you installed the PC link Sync software at XP successfully?
Use a DOS prompt and type \"route print\" and post the route table infomation here.

There should be a Zaurus icon on your Windows desktop. Double click that icon will establish linkage with your Zaurus.

I can connect to my Zaurus using the file transfer program. I have to set the connection as USBI/O. Whenever I set the connection to USB TCP/IP, I cannot connect anymore. Zaurus doesn\'t show up on Explorer or in the network places. I am having trouble transferring large files from my SD card to the PC through Zaurus file transfer. In fact this is why I want to try Samba or SSH.

Well I ran \"route print\" but I don\'t know how to copy the information and post it here. Please excuse my \'lameness\'. Instructions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Samba (and everything else bar the Sharp software) won\'t work if you have it set to usb/io.

I had troubles (with 5500, ROM 3.08) setting to usb/tcp-ip as then the Sharp software wouldn\'t work, but samba would. However you need to know the IP address of your Z (by default it\'s 192.168.129.201 I think). You should be able to type the following in the \'Run\' command:

\'192.168.129.201home\' and explorer will open a window.

The output of \'ipconfig\' might be useful if it still doesn\'t work, but \'route print\' can also be interesting ;-)

I did set it to USB TCP/IP. This resulted in the Sharp software (File transfer) to stop working. I also couldn\'t ping my zaurus and issuing the \"Run\" command as outlined also couldn\'t find my zaurus. What is the problem? I also tried setting up the network from Win XP, but nothing works. I probably am doing something fundamentally wrong and would like the help of this group in identifying the problem.
Thanks

Can you use your Win XP to surf the Internet?

If yes, it shows that your TCP/IP stack is in place.

It looks like your USB port problem, check it out.  Use other USB port or make use of USB hub.

Yes I can surf the net. I can also use USB flash storage with which I don\'t have any problem. But I cannot connect my Z through USB TCP/IP.

If you can\'t ping then you have troubles. Don\'t worry (too much) about the Sharp file tranfer not working. This is (initially) caused by you not being able to ping, but I could never get it to work anyway when using usb/tcp-ip (even though I could ping, use samba, ssh, etc.).

Firewall?
Have you set the IP address on your desktop in Network settings?
Run \'ifconfig\' on your Z, see what it says, run \'ipconfig\' on your desktop.

There are lots of posts about this. Once you\'ve got it to ping in both directions then you\'re ready to try to use samba.

I now can ping my Z from Win XP. But running 192.168.129.201home gives an eror message \"No network provider accepted the given network path.\"
Running IPCONFIG gives identifies IP of Z. The Connection specific DNS suffix and Default gateway fields are blank. Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.
