I use mutt. Quick stat up time, small size, very flexible.

I too prefer mutt.  Besides the features outlined above, it is the only of the bunch (AFAIK) that supports printing.  It works great w/ a2ps/lprng.  I think it supports SSL also, although I use it with a SSH tunnel via zkeychain.

SSL is easily supported though using stunnel. I've been using gmail with QTMail for months now.

How do I set up stunnel to support SSL and use QTmail to check Gmail?

The New Cacko ROM already has Stunnel enabled and installed, so one step is already donw for you.

It also has the necessary Stunnel.conf files as well as POP3 and SMTP.conf in seperate conf files under /etc/stunnel directory.
So using the new Cacko, you just need to tewk existing setup a bit.

so I can setup stunnel to talk to an ssl qpopper and postfix on my home server?

The port settings will be non standard, but I assume that is trivial.

I've done some more reading on this, and this seems like the way to go.  It's like chutes and ladders with network services.

stunnel is a way to ssl apps that are not ssl aware.  I'm trying for a setup that will use fetchmail, procmail, msmtp/postfix/sendmail and a pop server (mac mini and/or sl-c760) on a server at home.  I will then use the 3100 to retrieve the mail securely.  This proposed method seems good because I will not have to spend as much time locking down the pop and smtp ports and will only use one port.

Currently road runner does not allow smtp relaying (for good reasons) and only has non-ssl pop (not good for retrieving mail over the internet).

BTW does pine render html well?

With using an ssl tunnel does that mean we can access gmail pop?  Right now I can't access it because the sharp mail program dosn't support it.

Just adding SSl support will enable the Sharp email prog to receive (and send) Gmail POP. And you can also send mail via Gmail's own SMTP server (a great boon when you are connected thru a free Wifi hotspot).

I used my zaurus for my Gmails for my job search exclusively. Didn't have to reply on office mail id for those quick contacts to headhunters and all.

Yep.  That's what I used to use in the old days when most mail was just text.  And I still sometimes use it on the servers at work, but I wouldn't call them modern versions....

Is it possible using the default mail program to set folders to be synced for offline use? I had the default up and running using IMAP with my mail server, and all of my email headers would appear, but when I exited email and went back in it had all disappeared, and then had to be downloaded again. It would be great to be able to set it up to sync selected folders for offline use.

If the default app is unable to do this, are there any others that provide good integration with an IMAP server? including offline use?

Which model and ROM are you running?  The answer will depend on that.

I am suspicious that it may not be that IMAP is broken but that it's a qtopia issue.

On my 2.38, I stopped using the GUI to call qtmail as if I tapped too hard or long, it would open qtmail several times and close them in reverse order, totally forgetting about the POP mail I had already downloaded.

I solved the problem by starting qtmail from the console.

The other reason could be it doesn't finish writing it's index files because of a bus error...overloaded memory.  You won't see that if you don't run from command line.   My Z forgets that it's downloaded mail and downloads multiple copies if I'm not careful!  They don't show up in qtmail but do show when I examine the inbox from the console.

Don't know if what I'm saying applies to your particular ROM, but IMO these are issues worth considering.

I can tell you that tkcMail does IMAP but my Version: 2.1-050405 copy screws up the date and time stamp info, seeming to be hard-coded at GMT, won't give me access to attachments, is unable to display email with certain character combos in it (such as >>), erratically eats characters in outgoing email (i.e., symbols like = and `) and  re-downloads any IMAP emails I may have erased when off-line.

Now, I don't know much about IMAP but I do know that the only way I can be sure of not downloading the same IMAP email again with tkcMail is to do my erasing while online.  I'm afraid this may be a standard feature of IMAP.  Does anyone know?

Lots of people like Mutt and Pine and I'd suggest you check them out.  They are more work to install, but at least you can configure them to your own liking.

With all my problems with tkcMail, I'm still using it as it does generally perform better than the qtmail in 2.38, but that isn't saying much.  I just haven't had the  time it would take to switch to Mutt or Pine.

I have an SL-5500 running OZ3.5.4 with opie. So i assume the "default mail" i referred to is opiemail...

I use imap for all of my mail on my laptop, and anything that gets deleted while offline doesn't reappear when I'm online, and it does get deleted from the online version of my mail.

hmmm... I used to use pine at Uni (a looong time ago) - maybe I'll have a look at that. I've found that I can ssh from konsole to my webhost and run pine through the konsole, but it's not much use for writing emails offline.

I've had the zaurus for 4 days now, and am very impressed, it's just a bit disappointing that there aren't many full featured mail apps. I'll give pine or mutt a go next week and see how they go. Any pointers to a howto to configure pine/mutt - especially for offline use?

Mutt!  Wuv Mutt.  It's actually my primary mail program even on my desktop; I've set it to use Vi as my email editor, and it works like a champ.  Haven't installed it on the Z yet (was holding off installing software until Oz 3.5.4.1) but I'll be doing that soon enough.  Hurrah!
