I\'ve enjoyed my little foray into OZ, I think it\'s conceptually a much better OS than some of the other ROMs. The newer OZ ROMs are looking very attractive too :-)

I\'m just having to return to tkROM again because of my inability to install the applications I want to on OZ. I don\'t want to kill of my 5500, it still works and I\'ve looked after it well over the year and a bit that I\'ve had it.

I hope there is life in my 5500 yet!

what apps cant you install on OZ? (other than Hancom, TKC, Opera) Just curious to see whats out there....

The main ones I wanted were:

Hancom Sheet and Word, now I could install earlier v1 versions of both on OZ3.2, but not on any of the later OZ ROMs. I couldn\'t get Hancom v1.5 versions to work on any OZ ROM.

I could get Opera to install on OZ3.2, though the icons didn\'t show up. Konqueror worked fine though.

I couldn\'t work out how to get the Opie media player 2 to install for the life of me, but I got XMMS to install and run, which was cool, I liked that.

I couldn\'t get Apache to run, though it would install, so I never got around to checking to see if MySQL worked too.

As for other apps, I wasn\'t really trying that many. Just the main few that I wanted.

I can say that Opie with the Liquid theme makes it look quite sophisticated. It is a nice look.

But the lack of a working Spreadsheet and Wordprocessor were causing me more issues.

I do like OZ though, I am looking forward to OZ 3.6, I just hope that OpenEmbedded gains support now that there are so many devices out there. As much as I hate to admit it, for me, the Z suffers from the same problems thanks to Linux as a desktop does. Doing things with Linux seems cool, but takes longer to get working and doesn\'t always do quite what I\'d like it to do. Linux always seems to be playing catch up. However, Linux has evolved so quickly and caught up significantly, that I have high hopes :-)

Yes, I have been running the experimental version of OZ for a while and I too am going back to tkcROM v1. Its a shame cause OZ looks great and many things work well... but the gymnastics you need to do to get some software working (e.g. the compat-libs) and other \"wierd\" behavior makes it a deal-breaker for me.

Oh well, hopefully with OpenEmbedded the drive to build better apps will take off. I may be incorrect, but in the early days of the Zaurus, new apps were appearing often, but then they stopped being updated. Probably because the Zaurus wasn\'t the PocketPC breaker people hoped for. But then, I blame that on the original PIM apps which were and still are, far too poor in comparison to encourage people to switch.

The Zaurus appeals to geeks because it\'s so versatile, but it really needed to appeal more to the common man or woman on the street and the onboard apps just would never do that. It\'s a shame that they weren\'t the emphasis of major evolution within the first year of the Zaurus\' life, sponsored by Sharp.

But that\'s my little rant :-)

The Opie PIM does something that the Sharp PIMs don\'t though, they allow you to display things firstname lastname, rather than lastname, firstname which annoyed me!

I\'ve no idea what the issue is that people are having with this. The old versions install fine for me. I have seen some ipks kicking around though which have poorly formed \'control\' files which cause ipkg to give up. The latest versions can also be installed (and now that the devnet\'s back up you can see how - it\'s painful and to tell the truth there\'s nothing I know of that the newer versions have that the old ones don\'t, in fact it\'s the other way round I think, certainly in terms of importing things).

The icons not showing is a known issue, \'ln -s /opt/QtPalmtop/opera /usr/local/opera\' or something like that is the fix.

It\'s a pity I couldn\'t even get the older versions of Hancom to work with the newer versions of OZ.

I did enjoy my OZ experience. I will return when the next stable version comes out. :-)

I just wish I were a programmer. If there is a new version of the clamshell Zaurus, I\'m pretty sure I\'ll buy one via shirtpocket and get all Zaurus obsessed all over again.
