I finally broke down and decided to get the 6KL, even though I really wanted the 6KW.  Now if I\'m gonna splurge, I\'ll splurge. Now the question is, what would be the best components (and most compatible)  to get, if you were starting from scratch (ignoring cost)?

I was thinking:
Base Unit
Expansion \"Sled\"
SD card: How big is best and which brand?
CF Memory: How big is best and which brand?
CF GPS: Which brand is best?
Extra Battery(ies): Needed?
Extra Dock: Needed?
CF Wired Ethernet: Which brand is best?
CF Bluetooth: Which brand is best?
Screen Protector:Which brand is best?
USB Cable:
USB to Serial (for Cisco consoles):
CF Camera: Which brand is best?
Multi-Reader (for Desktop System): Which brand is best?
Keyboard: Which brand is best?
Carrying Case (Actually I designed a cool one but need to patent it):             Otherwise which brand is best?
Wireless WAN Card:

Am I missing anything someone found useful?

Thanks for the help.

User soon to have a Z =]

P.S. Ok I kinda do care about the prices, the best place to buy would be a great help.

P.S.S. We should compile a list for all the best H/W and the best places to get them.

Well ignoring cost, you could get up to a 4 gig CF card, but they\'re crazy expensive (~$400ish). The largest SD is 1gb (~$250). As far as best brand, I think they\'re all roughly the same, SanDisk and VIking are some well known brands. I\'d reccomend getting any memory modules through www.dealram.com can help you get the best prices.

I\'ve looked into wired ethernet a little, and found ounly a handful of Ethernet CF cards, I wanan say they\'re like $50 or so, but the only brands I found I didn\'t recognize.

Look back in this forum for GPS info, I think a few weeks back there was a thread about that, same with Bluetooth.

I don\'t believe there are any carrying cases specifically for the 6000 yet, since it\'s so large. Myself, I keep it in a pocket now or my laptop bag.

I don\'t know if I\'ve seen a USB to serial cable, check out BlackBox.com they might have it.

And finally, the sled, there\'s mixed opinions, I currently don\'t have it, since it almost doubles the thickness, and all I\'d use is the extra battery really. I\'m holding out hope that Sharp will make a PCMCIA sled, htat would be useful.

Anywho, hope this info helps some

I finally broke down and decided to get the 6KL, even though I really wanted the 6KW.

I have done the same thing...Mine should be waiting for me when I get home today.

Here is someof my thoughts and questions

Quote

SD card: How big is best and which brand?

I am thinking 512 is the smallest I want to go, though the 1gb is almost 3 times as much so I think I will stick with one 512 and uses something in hte CF slot.

Quote

CF Memory: How big is best and which brand?

Microdrive or flash?  This is where i am debating right now...there is not that much of a different for a 2gb cf card 150-200 is what I am finding.   Is there any real benifites or problems getting one or the other.

Quote

Extra Battery(ies): Needed?

I figure this and a battery charge will be my next by after I get my cf/sd cards...I figure it is always nice to have an extra battery with me...expecially if I plan on being out and about all day and will not have time to plug in my Z while using it...

Quote

Extra Dock: Needed?

I am not sure if I will need a extra dock.  Extra power cord or two I can see though the dock does nto seem like something I will uses much since I plan to sync over the wireless network.

Keyboard: Which brand is best?

I already own a targus wireless keyboard for my treo that i plan to use on my 6k...I have alreay used it on my friends C700 with both irk on cacko and with xirkd on pdaxrom, so I know it works well on the zaurus...It has the larger keys so it is more like using a laptop keyboard...

I also plan on getting a usb hub so that I can try to uses my logitech wireless keyboard and mouse on it, but that may not happen right way, it is more for my idea of using my Z with a external HD, exteranal DVD/CD-RW, Sled, and CF VGA card...not sure if it will work but I am going to try...

Carrying Case (Actually I designed a cool one but need to patent it):             Otherwise which brand is best?

I am a holster type of person and have been looking to see what i can find that will fit a 6.5 inch pda and have nto really found that much.  I am guessing I am goign to have to fabracte one for the 6k after i get it.

Other then extra power cables(one for work, home, jacket pocket) I would say you have listed almost everything I have thought of so far...

As I start to uses my Z I am sure I will come up with other things I need or want...[/quote]

Just one suggestion for the CF. Don\'t buy a PQI card, because it wouldn\'t be possible to use to flash your ROM.

First- while I\'m not sure about SD cards, there *are* performance differences amongst CF cards. Several speed tests are available via the altar of Google, butsandisk cards are, oddly, among the slowest. (I use lexar cards in some really OLD and SLOW palmtops and the speed difference is noticeable)

The next thing is.. If at all possible I\'d hold off on anything larger than a 256MB SD card for several months. The prices have dropped dramatically over the past year as the top sizes continue to increase, and your main storage may end up being the CF slot (where $ per megabyte is best).

A gps in CF format.. yeah, I\'d take one, though I\'d try for usb connectovity first. BUt that\'s something where I\'d only use the gps with the sled, since when I do need a gps, I\'m often out of range of the mains for day days on end.

Wired ethernet is handy when you need it, but again- any old ne2k compatible cf 10/t card should be fine. Most of the time it will be just as easy to d usb  networking anywhere you need wires YMMV, of course, but this has been my experienve with a C750.

We are ordering ours soon, and I will have a chance to check the fit, but OtterBox may make something that will work- i know that it holds a jornada 720 HPC just fine, and those are pretty large.

Other cases to look at are larger digital camera cases, or older 110 style camera cases.

Anyone know of a really small or foldable USB keyboard?
current love:
SL6000, palmone IR keyboard, 2GB hitachi CF drive, pdaxrom.

hp200ls, hp95lx, t3,t5,t|E,palmIII, jornada 720, jornadao 320

Here are a few things I have come up with since I got my Z a little over a week ago...

GSM of RxTT cf phone card...GSM is what I currently have and have seen that the audovox cf card works so I may go for that later.

Retractable 2.5mm Headphones, 18.95, JAVOebud
is the one I am looking at right now...I have already lost the Radio shack adpater I got so taht I could uses my current headphones si I am looking at getting a 2.5mm headphones now.

2.2GB CF MicroDrive, 148.00
, for space for things like movies and oggs...

Archos 20gb USB Drive, 148.00, that is the size of a zip disk...at least that is what I think after reading the other forum that talks about it...smaller then the size of 3 floppydisks...For the price and space I may go for this instead of the microdrive, though I still have a few more weeks before I will be ordering one or the other so my mine might change though for what I want it for the 20gb might be better...
