ROM Choices for SL-5600?
« on: December 08, 2003, 09:27:23 am »
I\'m new to the Zaurus scene.  I\'m looking for an improved ROM.  I like what I see in the specs for the theKompany.rom, but cannot see any similar literature for OZ.  Is there a place that lists exactly what the developers have done in OZ?

Will theKompany.rom work on my 5600?  Is there a place that breaks down ROM\'s by hardware so I\'d know I\'m getting something at least compatible?

Thanks for your help.

I am a newbie too but have successfully put The Kompany ROM into my
SL5600.  It worked the first time.  Wireless works wonderfully (better than my
damned SuSE 8.2 laptop!).  There are some annoyances, like missing sysinfo
utility and deletion of Sharp PIM apps etc.  I am probably going to try  Zynergy5600 ROM next- from the name alone there is no doubt it is supposed to work on 5600.  This looks like a better choice because it includes libOpie, which should allow you to run both Qt-based and Opie-based applications.

I have not been able to get any straight info about whether OZ or Familiar will run on 5600.

OpenZaurus is still experimental on the 5600, but working somewhat apparently. Look at the news from July 22 here:

The experimental 5600 ROM is here:

Hmm I wonder why you point to the experimental version, when we have released 3.3.5 (unstable)

Because I didn\'t realise there was a release of 3.3.5 for the 5600

http://www.openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/poodle/

Isn\'t this release in general somewhat unstable at the moment?

Sure, 3.3.x is the unstable branch - but as far as I\'m concerned we\'re out of experimental status now.

Versioning roughly is like this:

[snapshot-date] = experimental
[odd minor number] = unstable (e.g. 3.3.x)
[even minor number] = stable (e.g. 3.2)

the version I found here
http://openzaurus.org/unofficial/experimen...ntal/poodle/2.0
seems to run the best on my 5600. It says in the sys info its version 3.3.4.
only thing not working AFAICT is Konqueror

cheers,
sid.

Well, I did as I said and put Zynergy on my SL5600.  This also worked first time (I must be living right!).

Impressions- for some reason this works much better for me than TheKompany rom.  I had real problems with both hdw and software keyboards \"sticking\" (repeating letters) under tkc- this is gone now.  Also task switching seems faster, though still not instantaneous like on a Palm.

PIM apps are left intact by Zynergy and sysinfo utility works.

For my uses I had to add ssh client and server from ipkg feeds, and a few other things.  Works great!

I\'ve tried OZ 3.3.5 and 3.3.6-pre1 in my SL-5600 and I\'ve had the same problem with both: the kernel keeps sending to the display messages like \"ts: pxyp=471(1405/12,2000...\" on the bottom of the display, screwing the rest of the \"desktop\", anyone with this problem too? I thought this was a syslogd problem but i checked and it was running!
OZ looks great! but with this visual problem I cannot use it :-(

I have been using the Zynergy5600 rom and it has worked awesome.  I\'ve discovered that the *bug* with the gui installer can be circumvented by ensuring that a SD card is inserted.  Works great for me, highly recommend it for a try.

this is a known issue with a known work around ...

I\'m too lazy to do a search for you now, but a search should find how to
stop the output (it\'s an \"echo 1\"  to a path as the first line of the opie startup).
I\'m sure someone will post a better answer here.

Yes! thanks for the answer, for the record, people has to do this as root:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/printk

This can be added to some script, for example /etc/init.d/rc.local, and add a symbolic link to /etc/rc2.d/S99local

I think I did it to my opie script... that is, that\'s the first line --
as this value is read only once and therefore needs to be there before opie
starts up.  etc.  I can\'t remember if opie is 2 or 3.d ... if opie is 3,
then 2.d/S99 is fine, but 3.d/S99 would not be.
