streaming movies of laptop over usb cable
« on: June 17, 2004, 07:26:28 am »
Hi,

i\'d love a few quick pointers regarding this. I\'m going away on holiday and bringing my old broken screen laptop to store my photos on (using vncviewer of z). How is the best way to stream movies off my laptop onto my Z?

What package of samba works on the c860? Can i setup a direct file streaming server?
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

check out videolan at http://www.videolan.org/
you can use either vlc (client) or vls (server) to stream.

I haven\'t tried vlc yet, but i got samba to finally mount and i was impressed. Videos seem to stream great off my laptop over usb. I\'m wondering now, would the performance be as good with a CF wifi card? would the wifi card take too much processor?  If you exit qtopia and try to play the videos from that point would it be much faster?

Sorry for the late reply. My previous post only answered your question partially,i.e., how to stream from a laptop or desktop running windows, linux or mac os. VLC works well - I have been using that for a while from a w2k box and am able to receive video on my laptop.

I haven\'t figoured a way to view video on my Zaurus. The default player doesn\'t work. I also tried vlc but install failed.

I will keep you posted on my progress. And the sametime if you are lucky to make it work, please share your experience with us.  Thanks.

wifi shouldnt take \'any\' extra processor time, the card deals with most of this, infact many wifi cards simply have an ARM inside with a little bit of flash where the firmware is loaded. software based wifi cards are not all that popular (if at all they exist) they will probably be the next \'winmodem\' type thing.

pop the deal laptop in your backpack with a wifi card :-)
