New SL-5600 Owner questions
« on: June 23, 2004, 03:31:25 pm »
Howdie people!

Being a tech geek (and having gone through PPC and Palm platforms) i decided to give the Zaurus SL-5600 a go (got it by trading for my TungstenT). My handheld is a used one in perfecyt condtion.

I got a few questions that have come up:

1)When charging, is the Zaurus supposed to heat up a bit, especially around the battery area?
2)How can i find out if my handheld has a PXA250 or PXA255 CPU?
3)Whats the best rom (most functional) that i could flash my handheld with? I heard that there was a Debian port out there, but i cant seem to track it down
4)Any good beginer links for me? (ps, ive already read the faqs on the main site  )

Any help greatly appreciated

1)When charging, is the Zaurus supposed to heat up a bit, especially around the battery area?

4)Any good beginer links for me? (ps, ive already read the faqs on the main site  )

Cheers mate. BTW ive noticed something else. When i use the zaurus, it tends to heat up a bit at the screen edges (where the backlight comes from). Anyone encountered that before?

Is it :

32 Megs of Rom for Storage

1) My 5600 heats up by the light when turned on in the cradle. I think it's normal and all batteries heat up when being recharged at a fairly fast rate.

2) The command 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' shows what CPU you have

3) How long is a piece of string? Everyone has different functionality requirements. Do you want a more desktop-like linux ROM?

Yes i would prefer a more desktop-like rom

I flashed my big Z with the tK rom yesterday...far better than the original sharp rom if u ask me.

I also found out that i got a PXA250 CPU (bummer), but also heard that there is some way to make the Z work much faster via some update of some sort.

Any ideas?

Check out the Special Kernel v1.3 on this page:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...download&sid=53

I'm not really aware of any X Windows only ROMs on the 5600 (or 5500 for that matter). It's only really the SL-Cxxx series that have had any ROMs done to be more like desktop linux since they have a VGA screen, instead of a QVGA screen. The 5600 only has variants of the Sharp ROM, like tkcROM. There is xqt thought, which is a Qtopia X Windows client.

Howdie again guys

The Z is looking good. A couple of days ago i came across a port of the Exult engine (the Ultima 7 engine) but i cant get it to work for me. First of all, every .ipk i download (all dled from the official site) will only install in the onboard flash rom and not on my CF card (i dont have an SD to try it there). Then after i  install to the onboard memory i have to find an exult.cfg file to edit and make it point to my static folder (the one which contains the U7 data, copied from a PC U7 installation). I have tried using the folder stated in some instructions i found while googling (/mnt/cf/exult-data/bg/static/) but when i try to run the game, it will only display a black screen and then crash (the whole zaurus, not just the game). Even if i do not copy the files to said folder, the game will still crash...

I can not seem to be able to locate the installation folder in the flash rom. Ive also tried to do a find exult.cfg command in the console, but that wont give me any results either...

Any help is greatly appreciated
