Anyone using mp3 player hard drives?
« on: June 24, 2004, 10:45:23 pm »
A while ago there was a thread about extracting a 4 gig micro drive in a flash card from a popular mp3 player.

Does anyone know if any of the recent 20 or 30 gig mp3 players also use a compact flash based hard drive?

I was looking at the creative nomad, rca lyra, rio karma and something called a archos.  These are all 20 or 30 gig units and I am wondering if any of them use compact flash drives.  I've checked the net and I haven't found anything one way or the other.

Those 10-20 GB MP3 players are using mini hard drives.

There are no such thing as 20-30gb microdrives (compact-flash compatible hard drives).  I'm not sure of the largest available, but 4gb seems to be the 'norm' for a high-capacity microdrive.

Those use miniature hard drives, most likely either 2.5" laptop drives, or pcmcia style hard drives.

thanks for the info.  I saw some of those mp3 players for pretty good prices and was wondering.

The most popular drive to rip a microdrive out of is the Creative Muvo2.
Apparently the new version doesn't let you take the drive away (it's not CF compatible anymore)
It's 4Gb. There are no larger microdrives right now.
