Please dont turn this into a flam war of clam vs normal style pdas.

I have a 5500 and am happy with it. However it just seems that im going to be left in the dust as far as options go and development for new applications ect ...
I love the clamshell style but like all the extras of the 6000

on either i would probabbly get a pocketop keyboard and see how using either as a lappy replacement goes (though highly doubtful but i could see myself using it for email and browsing in livingroom remote terms to the myth box and other servers for quick tasks without breaking out the laptop especially if friends are over.)

anyway on with the post ... I really need soem help evaluating the two anyone luckyenogh to have a clam and a 6000 to best compare? I welcome all opinions and reviews comparing the two ect.

portability goes to the clamshell. The keyboard is better on the clamshell, but if you are using an external keyboard most of the time it will be a moot point.

The 6000 is better in sunlight and has built in wifi and USB host. I also missed the d-pad. Most of the active developers are clamshell or 5500 so development for 6000 only apps may seems slow.

So the main things is how are you going to integrate it into your daily life? I can keep a 760 in my cargo pants no problem.I doubt it would fit as easily wit the 6000.

BTW is the pdaxrom working on the 6000

I have a 5600 and a 700/760 -- not quite the 6000.

Still, for me, the built-in keyboard of the 760 makes all the difference.

I am speaking out of ignorance, because i only have a sl-5500, but if i were to get one I would get the c860 because of the padXrom and the larger keyboard. Also if you were to surf the web allot, the c860 is more suited that because you can have it landscape (for better viewage of the site; so it fits on the screen better) and still type URLs and things.

Me too, I am missing something like Abiword on my 5500. On PdaXrom you (can/ could) have a lot of software, because it is X based.

I currently own a SL-6000L...I started my handheld life was a Sharp Wizard later getting a Zaurus back in 95 where both where the clam shell...I even have a friend that has bought a C700 so I have used the clam shell...In the end when I cam down to it I decided I like the idea of Intigrated lan and the usb host more then I like the built in keyboard. In the three weeks since I got my 6k I have almost got to the point that it has replaced my desknote(Portable Desktop in laptop form without battery) with the uses of a Targus keyboard, and this is without having a cf or sd card to up my storage space...Though I am a Solaris and linux admin that believes in the fact that the network in my computer si most of the time I am websurfing or using a terminal on one of my servers. About 99% of the time I do use my Z in landscape more even when it is not being used in my Targus keyboard. I like having the d pad for navagating the web...I find websurfing on the C700 to be a pain since I can not do it one handed as easy as I can on my 6k. The size really is not that bad since I usually carry it in the front pocket of my jeans every day except for them I am on my bike then it is in one of the pockets on my jacket...I will admit that I own a Handspring Treo 180 so I am uses to using a thumb board and find the one on the z to be one of the best I have used...Though I do have to admit I can almost type normal on the C700 but found if I am really trying to type using the Targus on the C700 is the only way to go...I found the screen on the 6k to be amazing even compared with the C700...the extra half inch makes a big difference...As for battery life I am able to get about 3.5 to 4 hours of continues uses with teh wifi on and I have never ran the batter down if I am not using the wifi(longest so far has been 9 hours of php programing and reading of docs)...I only got my goldx quickconnect cables 10 minutes before I headed off on vaction this weekend so I have not had much time to play with hooking things through the usb host yet to see what I think of that...

My finally thoughts are that if I could have got a Clam with the intigrated WiFi and usb host I think I would have gone that way, though I have to say I am very happy with my 6k and would have to say I think I am happy I took this route now instead of a clam even though I have not got pdaxrom working on my 6k yet(Though I know I will sooner or later)...Just my though from a 6k owner that wants it to be my portable computer...

I recently purchased a 6000L but have no experience with the 860 or prior versions. I have read reviews and would probably suggest you read the reviews Review 1 and Review 2.

They both talk about the 860 in their review as well.

I really like my 6000L..alot. I am looking forward to some other roms but it is a great machine. While it is big, I have no problems carrying it in the front pocket of my trousers.

Could anyone that has used both the SL-C860 and SL-6000 tell us the differences between these two units?
I'm interested in buying one and as I can't test any of them I'm very interested in other people experiences with them.
Some people say the keyboard and the smaller size of the SL-C860 is a must and other people prefer the integrated wireless of the SL-6000L
What do you recommend?

I would say it all comes down to what you plan on doing with your Z. If you plan on using wireless network a lot though still what to have larger amounts of space(2GB+) then the SL-6000L maybe your better choice since you will still have the CF slot open for microdrives and flash cards and you can get usb drives to hook into the unit also...The things that you loss out on with the 6000 is the size, it is a few inchs longer and I want to say a little thicker so it is not as easy to put in a shirt pocket though I have found mine fits in my jeans pocket without a problem...Most of the time I am using mine on a WiFi network where I do a lot of websurfing which is great having the D-pad avalible to navigate through webpages...

Though I will not say that the SL-6000 is right for everyone...The Clan shell version is nice and would have been what I would have went with if there would have been one with intergrated WiFi...The keyboard is nice, it is easier to get uses to then the thumbboard...Being able to close the clam shell to give protection to the screen...Also PDAXROM is already avalible for the Clam shell...

As I started out saying you need to decide what you plan on doing with your z...If you want to be able to have access to a lot of space and still uses the WiFi network then a 6k might be your best choice(This is my main reason for going with the 6k)...Other then the expandablity I would say the Clam shell has more going for it...I have only used the C700 so I can not say anything about the C860 but form my understanding they are not that much different...Take a look at the reviews that stevevw linked to, they give a good look are the 6k and compare it to the 860 and other Handhelds...Hope that helps someone...

I have a 6000L, and it does fit in cargo pants. The clamshell keyboard is supposed to be better, though.

I can speak from the angle of upgrading to the Clamshell series from the 5600.

I love the integrated keyboard. It is much, much easier to type on the Clamshell than it is on the 5600, and I use my Zaurus mainly for development and fun. The 5600 was a great device, but I felt that the large lack of support for it is its major drawback. I'd imagine that's how it is for the 6000, seeing as how it just recently came out. The C860 that I have has a huge support base, and that makes it so much easier when it comes to wanting something. The 5600 barely had anyone that had it, everyone had a 5500. I'd imagine with the 6000 it's practically the same, seeing as how it's brand new. I'm sure in time though it'll pick back up.

Personally, I say go for a clamshell series. It really does pay when you can fold down and protect the screen, and it is much easier to type with the wider keyboard. Applications are more than plentiful and it is very stable.

I've just upgraded from a 5600 to a C860 too. The clamshell is a wonderful machine, it's hard to get an idea of how compact it is until you see it in front of you.

I did like the 5600 very much too though. In terms of support the 5500 has it though, as pretty much everything that will fit onto a 320x240 screen is normally compiled for the 5500. The 5600 is better specified but as mentioned already it has a small userbase so it may never get supported to the same extent as the 5500.

I would say if you like the 640x480 idea but also hanker after a portrait PDA, why not invest in a CX60 and a secondhand 5500 as they are available so cheaply? That way you get something to drag around with you in a pocket and not worry about too much, and the clamshell with it's excellent keyboard for more "serious" use. Even though I am so impressed with the C860, I do wish I could afford to have kept my 5600 too....

Sorry, I wishfully misread that as a declaration, not a question.

The pdaXrom isn't working on the 6000 yet, AFAICT.

Ok, if this was already mentioned forgive me I didn't see it. I have a C860. What I havn't heard mentioned in this thread is the fact that the C860 can funtion in both the clam shell mode and the portrait mode. The screen swivels around and folds down on top of the keyboard on the unit, so from a hardware aspect (clam vs portrait) it becomes a moot point since it functions both ways.
