Problem with tkc installs
« on: July 12, 2004, 10:52:47 pm »
I tried to install a couple of tkc products to my c860 using the latest Cacko rom. I previously downloaded and successfully installed the demo versions of these products and they all worked great. I uninstalled all the demo versions of these products and rebooted the Zaurus before trying the install of these packages. In no way, am I unhappy with tkc because they make it clear that they only support the original rom. But I wonder if anyone else has had this problem or if they found a work-around in the Cacko ROM.

1. tkcAddressBook - C700

I unzipped the package to tkcaddressbook_2.0-031112_arm.ipk and copied it to my SD drive. When I tried to install it I got a 'The filename of this package includes character this application can't handle. Please change the file name and retry install' error message. I tried renaming the file several different ways but all the install attempts failed.

2. tkcCalendar - C7x

I unzipped the package to tkccalendar_2.0-040113_arm.ipk and copied it to my SD drive. When I tried to install it I got a 'The filename of this package includes character this application can't handle. Please change the file name and retry install' error message. I tried renaming the file several different ways but all the install attempts failed.

3. tkcGallery - C7x

I unzipped the package to tkcgallery-c7xx_3.0-040126_arm.ipk and copied it to my SD drive. When I tried to install it I got a 'ipkg says something went wrong. Sorry' error message.

I am using the Cacko v1.21b (linux kernel v2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-emb) ROM with Qtopia v1.5.4. I have about 87mb free on the internal flash drive. I am puzzled as to why the demos worked flawlessly and the licensed software failed to install. I would really like to get the tkcGallery installed because I'm a digital photographer and would like to display my images on the 860's bigger screen.

Haha that's TKC for you. I own a bunch of their apps and finally stopped using them after KDEPIM/PI came out. Its nutty how a couple of guys can implement everything people want/need in a few weeks and TKC and their team of "developers" can't do it in several months or even years.

And they only support Sharp ROMS, unless you "hacked" your Zaurus, and then you are out of luck, since you installed anything except TKC or Sharp software......

Call your credit card company and have them refund your money, quick[/i]
Handheld:. Sl-5500 tkcROM 1.0 (defunct) * apps on ext2 Lexar 256 SD
Desktop:. Mandrakelinux 10.2 Cooker * kernel 2.6.11
Both computers run linux, proud to be MS Free

The Cacko rom IS the sharp rom in the same way that the TKC rom is. They are all based on the original qtopia from the Sharp rom. The Cacko tream just removed the Japanese bits and added some extra stuff.

In theory all the apps from tkc should run on the Cacko rom, but as you mentioned they probably wont support you - actually they probably won't support you if you use a stock standard Sharp rom unless you only have tkc apps installed.

The key point I was trying to make is that TheKompany only "officially" supports the TKC and Sharp ROM, but that if you install any software other than tkc or what comes on the STOCK Sharp Zaurus, you have lost support since you have a "hacked" device, due to that additional software.  Sad but true.

I have similar intermittant problems when installing TKC software, one of the following eventually works.

Download a fresh copy of the software

Try unzipping on a PC and Zaurus, if you have TkcZip

I never know which works, as I can't tell which copy is which in the Zaurus installer!
