WEP, airport, zaurus
« on: July 13, 2004, 09:49:48 am »
Does anyone have any definitive answers/methods on whether it is possible to use a symbol wifi card in an SL-C860, with an airport network (firmware 5.4) with WEP? And if so, how?

I'd also be grateful for an idiot's guide to kismet...so far I've hardly managed to find an installable copy, and the one that did work gave a bus error straight away...

Thanks,

James

A Symbol wifi works - I have one and use it with my Airport Extreme.  I have a C760 though.  It also might need a /etc/pcmcia tweak.  The Socket CF -old model was a rebranded symbol (spectrum 24).  The new one is an orinoco that I don't know if it can be made to work.

Kismet won't work with a symbol/socket card without an updated driver (with monitor mode).  I don't know why you would get a bus error.  I compile my own and can use it with prism2 based cards, my symbol/socket, or my Cisco 350.  But my install is customized.

Thanks, I managed to get a clean D/L of kismet, but have not investigated using it yet.

Anyway, the wifi card works fine when WEP is turned off, and it is definitely a spectrum 24. Can you give any more hints about what needs "tweaking" in /etc/pcmcia? Having japanese software (on the zaurus) also doesn't help much!

Thanks,

James
