I'm confused what do people get for their full charged voltage on their c860's???  I get 3.85v... which i thought was normal for a li-ion battery. What is this 4.2volts threshold listed in the how-to?

I am just the HOW TO poster, the creator of the procedure is Aussie.  I am following the thread:

https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...?showtopic=5835

and suggest you do the same.

I will update the HOW to as new info becomes available and the fix is reproducable.

How did you measure that voltage?  Don't trust Qtopia battery applet - it shows VERY approximate numbers

Hmmm im little confused .....
multimeter shows 4,2 v
service menu 2,8 v
and cacko 3,79 v
Which of this value is correct - i believe multimeter but who knows....
In service menu i set battery memory to only 217; delta is about 435 - should i have this value about 600 ?

[span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\']FROM HOW TO:[/span]

3) THE FIX: Now, there is only one way to flash a new voltage level to memory - via the service menu, which is accessed by holding down the D+M keys whilst pluging in the AC/DC charger. Here on page 2, option 6, is the Battery Voltage Adjustment. The Main Bat AD: is the present voltage of the battery. Flash data: - - is the voltage level stored in the Zaurus memory. You can flash the present voltage of the battery into memory by pressing the Home or S key. But this will only flash the present battery voltage level, and there is no way of changing this. And if the present battery voltage has drained, then there is not much use in flashing a low voltage into memory - you need to flash a working voltage (preferably 4.2v).
What I did was simply charge my battery outside the my Zaurus by just connecting a wire from the positive centre of the charger to the positive battery terminal, and from the negative outside of the charger to the negative battery terminal. I then monitored the battery voltage level as it charged using a multimeter, and stopped charging once the battery voltage was 4.2v (it charged from 2.4v to 4.2v in about 2 hours).

Then, the fully charged battery was replaced in the Zaurus, and this voltage was then flashed to the memory.

Success ... Zaurus unbricked, and all working perfectly.

DISCLAIMER:  I have no idea of what I speak.      Just reading from the HOW TO

Nor do I, but I just rigged something up - a wire running from the positive inside pin of the charger to the positive terminal of the battery, and a wire clipped to the negative outside of the charger to the negative terminal of the battery.

How did you know what the end voltage should be for this particular battery?

Sorry no offense intended.  Just thought you had a fullly charged battery and were comparing voltages...

I have a charger....PM if you want to send the battery (USA) and have me fully charge it for you.....kind of the long way, but thought I should offer.

I just checked the battery voltage with a multimeter intermittently whilst it was charging, and was planning to stop a bit over 3.7v.  When I checked it at 4.2v, I said, "Shit, I'd better stop charging now, so the battery doesn't get too overcharged and risk damaging the Z circuitry".

Experiencing the same problem with my C860 pdaXrom, I'v just restored my backup NAND (Official Sharp) in order to check if the Flash Adj would be back to factory settings (i.e 4.2V).

Unfortunately : NO !!

Next step : the fridge trick !!
(I hope that letting my battery in the fridge during the night will increase the voltage output)

Will let you know...

Steph.

PS : Does the Cacko ROM raise the same issue ?

I have become confused regarding some of the info in these threads.

My C860 is working & charging without problems. The attachment is of screen shots from D+M mode after the charging light had gone out (ie: fully charged). They are:

- Service Menu pg (2/3)
- line 5 - Low Battery
- line 6 - Batt Voltage Adjust
- 6.1    - Battery Voltage Adj.
- & 6.2  - Battery Voltage Check.

OMICRON. You can include these with your How-To, if you like.

OK, first "2.5" (Low Battery Check) still shows Main Battery Status as "L", despite the full charge.

Next, at the bottom, "Main Bat" is 4.1V (218) & "Thrmo" is 1.4V (110). Thrmo probably refers to the thermistor reading between the (-) & (T) battery terminals, but I do not know how to interpret the values shown.

Going to "2.6.1" (Battery Voltage Adjustment), Main Bat AD (Analog - Digital??) is (218), the same value given above in "2.5". Although this is a fully charge & functional C860, the Flash Data is ----!

This appears to contradict the theory that there must be a threshold stored in Flash Data in order for the C860 to charge its battery correctly.

Feeback, please?

Then, in "2.6.2" (Battery Voltage Check), Main Bat AD is 218 BUT followed by the infamous (2.8V). Flash Data, delta & ADJUST AD are all ----. And notice there are TWO lines for ADJUST AD.

So, a fully charged C860 shows the 2.8V mentioned in other posts.

The same C860 & battery pack, at approximately 1/2 charge remaining, gave:

 2.5

 Status: L
 Main 3.8V (191) & Thrmo 1.4V (115)

 2.6.1

 Main AD 192
 Flash ----

 2.6.2

 Main AD 192 (2.4V)
Dlash, delta & ADJ AD all ----

In the Panasonic Li-Ion White Paper at:

Panasonic

under

"The Functions of the Safety Circuits (Typical Functions)"

it says -

1. The Overcharge Safety Function

The charge stops when the voltage per cell rises above 4.30 ± 0.05 V.
The charge restarts when the voltage per cell falls below 4.00 ± 0.15 V.

2. The Overdischarge Safety Function

The discharge stops when the voltage per cell falls below 2.3 ± 0.1 V.
The discharge restarts when the voltage per cell rises above 3.0 ± 0.15 V.

And in the "FLOWCHART FOR CHARGING LITHIUM ION BATTERY PACKS", immediately after the decision branch:

    ( OCV<4.2V? )

Is voltage check 1 (no load) higher than the charge completion voltage? (4.2 V) where OCV is "Battery Pack load open Voltage".

 (NO) ---> "Overcharge error"

(YES) --> the next decision branch:

    ( OCV>2.9V? )

Voltage check 2 (no load)

(NO) ---> "0.1 CmA Charge rate"

(YES) --> "0.7 CmA Charge rate"

If "0.1 CmA Charge rate" is the branch, the flow chart next shows a decision point "Overdischarge check"

    ( OCV voltage > 3V? )

(NO) ---> checks the Recharge timer and either goes to "Timeout Error" or branches back up to (A) immediately after the "Battery pack insertion check".

(YES) --> branches back up to (A) immediately after the "Battery pack insertion check" and reenters the flowchart there.

The notes for this section include:

(4) Low-Voltage Battery Pack Charge

When the voltage per cell is 2.9 V or less, charge using a charge current of 0.1 CmA or less.

Bearing in mind that, at the start of the paper, Panasonic cautions:

"The voltages listed below are typical values and are not guaranteed. The charge voltage varies according to model number."

the only reason that I can see so far for the 2.8V in (2.6.2) is that this is Sharp's value for the Low Voltage Charging cut off level.

Feeback, please?

Recap:

For a fully charge & functional C860:

(2.5) Main Battery Status is "L"

(2.6.1) & (2.6.2) Flash Data is ----

(2.6.2) Main Bat AD is the same as elsewhere BUT followed (2.8V).

NOT trying to be contentious, a "know it all" or to shoot anyone down, rather just that I am having trouble reconciling these data with several hypothesis put forward in these threads.
