c860 and prehipherals questions and recommendation
« on: July 28, 2004, 01:50:54 am »
Hi, i am looking for a pda for school use. I am upgrading from my palm NX-60. I have been reading a ton about this purcace, but I still have questions. I want to get a c860 from conics NEW and with warranty. anyplace else cheaper?

1.With the c860 I want to get a stylus, screen protector, protective case, wifi, 10/100 ethernet. I dont know which ones to get.

Stylus, pentopia is the only one conics sells. Any others so good as to warrant another company?

Screen protector, how is the one conics sells? Should I get a brando workshop one instead?

Case, I will pay up to $25 us. I want the case to proect the zaurus from falls and shocks and such. The palmpal 02 nylon looks like it would do that best. However the ELECOM (double padded) case and the zaurus soft case are in my means as well.

Wifi, Planex Communications, Buffalo/Melco, and Corega all are $75. Wich one?

10/100, the one by planex communications looks the best. No doors to break.   any cons?

2. Do you think I would need any more memory cards? I have a 256 SD, a 16 CF, 64 CF, and a 256 CF.

3. Does the free englis conversion add to the shipping time?

4. (Not as important as other questions) what rom? I want this to be a ultraportable linux box with GUI. I will probably end up dual booting. I want this to be a laptop. Wifi and 10/100 GUI setup and sniffing tools if possible, word processing and spreadsheet as good as sharps rom and a way to send them to winblows over intranet at least.   PIM apps, mp3, and games. I want at least as much versatility as sharp rom, prefer more. Simply stated, office apps,  intranet, multimedia and games. I can do e-mail over yahoo.

Thank in advance!:D

I've had my 860 for about 4 months now and I'm very happy with it, so here's my $0.02 worth.

Screen Protector - The Overlay Brilliant is ranked among the best and I'll be ordering one myself shortly.

Case - I got a $5 generic case and its served me very well. Its padded, has a velcro release belt strap, and space for 2 CF memory cards or a WiFi card.

Memory Cards - My best advice would be to use what you have for awhile, and if you find its not enough then upgrade accordingly.

External Keyboard - If you plan to do a lot typing then I highly reccomend this. Pocketop and Targus are both supported, and they're IrDA so no need for cables.

-Hope this helps

Thanks about the screen protector, but anyone know about the wifi and 10/100 cards?

I will be going into highscool in one year. How well does the z work with typing a document, putting it onto a fat/fat16/fat32 sd/cf, putting that card into a usb reader into a pc, and printing? How is the formatting preserved? And any way to print zaurus-mac-printer? And what is the best software printing zaurus-linux box?

Can you have a bash shell on sharp/cacao rom?
And can the cacao rom zoom like the sharp?
Yes I have been reading reading reading reading reading reading reading the forums

I have a Linksys WCF11 and it's truly plug-and-play with Cacko1.21b. I believe the WCF12 is the same but more power efficient.

Hancom Word is OK, but not brilliant. For simple documents with basic text formatting it works fine. As soon as you start adding text boxes, tables, picture objects etc it all goes awry. You can see the basic text but Hancom seems to simply ignore all the extra objects.

By the way, the C860 keyboard is great with a decent stable base to put the unit on, but I still wouldn't want to type War and peace on it

Yes.

Cacko basically IS the Sharp ROM (with all the Japanese stuff removed and a few usefull apps added), so yes.

Good luck, and for safety's sake, don't be tempted by aftermarket PSUs! Just buy a couple of sharp PSUs with the unit.

As for a stylus, you might take a look at Rotring. I have a couple that I have had for a number of years. They have a pen, pencil, highlighter and stylus. They use to make one with three instruments. They are high quality and one advantage is that nearly every fine writing shop carries Rotring, so it is not difficult to pick up replace pens and highlighters. They are also available online with a little searching.

As for the case, you may want to reconsider your price. I am cheap, but I am willing to pay to protect a $700 PDA and have a functional case. I purchased my case from Grindergear (the Expedition). It protects the PDA and has a pocket that holds all of the cards and cables that I carry.

Good luck.
