Open local file bug in Opera?
« on: August 04, 2004, 01:12:21 am »
I've tried to use the "Open Local File" menu item twice in Opera. Each time the device seemed to hang, and so I reset it on both occasions. What I'm wondering is if this is a known problem, or could it be that the ~750Mb of data on my 1Gb CF card (not a microdrive), is taking so long to read that it only appears to be hanging. I have no idea if Opera would even be reading the card, but the home page I was using was in fact on the card.

Thanks,

gdog

It isn't hanging. It does search the entirety of your file system for files it is associated with. Can you try without your CF card mounted?

A better way of opening a local file is to put '/' (without the quotes) or any other local path in as the URL and browse the filesystem.

GDog,

I have found the easiest way to open a "local" file is to use the Files Tab in the Qtopia Launcher. HTML and PDF file should have their mimetype associated with Opera, and tapping the file you want to open via this built in file manager should open Opera and the desired file with no long delays (at least it works for me).

I hope this helps,

Type file:/// in Opera's web page address edit box.

Good answers all, and I appreciate them. I've never used Opera before (longtime Mozilla/Netscape user). One of the primary uses I have for devices like this is as a documentation repository for the reams of info I have in relation to my job in IT. Unfortunately the javascript menu system I had been using on my last PPC is too much for Opera/Zaurus and runs dog slow. So I'm converting to a straight html menu system, hence the questions.

Here's another one. Does anyone know how to get Opera to open a directory listing? In IE and Mozilla both if I create a link like this:

<a href="file://somepath/">My directory</a>
or
<a href="file://somepath">My directory</a>

both browsers are able to display a list of the files in <somepath>. Opera on the Zaurus just tells me it can't open the file <somepath>. I tried tweaking the MIME types, to no avail.

Thanks again,

gdog

Which version of Opera do you have? I have Opera 6 and those URLs work fine for me.

Running Sharp ROM version 1.12 on my 6K and Opera version 7.25.

My bad. It works fine. Had a syntax error in the path. Doh

Thanks,
