GPS Question
« on: August 06, 2004, 01:20:01 am »
Hi guys hows it going

I am a wireless internet installer in springfield missouri and i am looking for a regular north and west reading cf gps unit,  i dont need the maps or anything like that b/c the laptop has mapquest or something like that on there i dont remember my boss uses it the most,  but he sends me out on these gps reading quests and i hate taking his bolky gps reader out with me, besides i'd rather have my own,  i generally dont want to spend more then 60 bucks on it so if someone gets better luck then i had looking for one thanks.  I have a SL 5600,  oh and a side item i'm looking for is a good case preferably a flip but if someone else suggests something different let me know  thanks guys

I use a serial GPS unit. Cost £70 (in England) a year ago so I imagine you could pick up something similar for the money you're thinking in the US.

I've no idea about CF GPS cards and chances are the search strings will be too short to work with the site so searching might not be too easy, but give it a go as I've seen lots of posts about trying to get such and such a CF GPS card to work.

Are you using your serial GPS with the Zaurus. I have a Garmin Legend and I would like to use it with my 860. I assume it would require the ZThinCable but I don't know how the interface would work. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Yep I use it with my Z.

It actually comes with a serial port on it (to be plugged into a PC), I presume your GPS needs a cable which terminates in a serial port (which you'd buy from Garmin). I then use a null-modem cable (and a gender changer? Can't remember as I built it myself) and plug that into my Z's serial cable.

Your best bet in the price range you are discussing is to find one on EBAY.  However if you go to http://www.gpspassion.com/en/hardware/gpslist.htm you can get a idea of what will work for you.  Also the http://qpegps.sourceforge.net/gps_units.html gives good info on what works with Z
