openzaurus 3.2, opie 0.9.3, kernel 2.4.6 help
« on: August 16, 2004, 04:15:29 pm »
I'm trying to get my zaurus in to a functional build,
I've surfed the net for a bit and i can see that i'm way out of date, but what is the best stable build in peoples opinions?
my main criteria is that it is easy to get a grasp of with plentiful documentation that can help me get a grasp of what is available.
the main thing for me is that it's made easy, i can't get my zaurus to dock with my pc so I'm having to copy files across using SD and mmc cards.

Basically i need a huge load of help to get back on my feet and using my zaurus anybody out there willing to lend me a hand?

Thanks

OZ 3.3.6pre1 is quite stable (as good as 3.2).

It uses a later kernel and a later libc (which is good and bad - good because you can run just about everything available, bad because you need to use the compat libs to run old Qtopia apps, but this is not difficult to set up and is then transparent in operation).

You say you can't get your Z to dock with your PC? What is the problem? Can you ping? If so I'd get ssh/sftp and then you can do file transfers, etc.

my main problem with docking is i don't know how to do it,
i remember reading something about needing to setup usb networking to make it work.

well i've flashed my zaurus to the rom you mentioned (using a cf card reader to transfer the data)

then i tried to get opiemediaplayer2 to work and it failed because my zaurus couldn't reach the internet.. so i guess i need to get this zaurus docking.

I know how to setup a pc network, but i can't get this usb networking to work for me. If you could give me a blow by blow set of instructions on how to get it working using the cradle to connect it would be much appreciated.

thanks

Since openzaurus 3.3.6-pre1 is using kernel 2.4.18 you will need the new sharp drivers for USB on pc. I dont know the link, but it is the driver they provide with sharprom 3.1x, that uses kernel 2.4.18.
Using linux on desktop ist should work with the usbnet module (or usbdnet, if you have old linux).
You can download the whole sharp cd or just the usb drivers for windows.
Maybe you also downgrade the hotplug on your Zaurus to the version came with OZ 3.2, if the Z dont connect to windows after resume.
Also have a look at the hentges rom, if you like to have opie 1.1.3 or 1.1.4. There is also a wellenreiter Edition.
Cheers,

Reboot the zaurus (halt and on, because the reboot code from sharp is buggy), then plug the Zaurus to your computer ( dont suspend, before connecting).
Now the Zaurus should be recognized.
If it is recognized, try suspend/resume. If now the Zaurus isnt recognized again, then you have to downgrade hotplug to version from OZ 3.2.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Sam

No, this is wrong.

For all versions of OZ you need the old skool 2.xx ROM USB drivers (we're talking about the 5500 and 5000D here). They are probably on the CD which you got with the unit.

On the Z side the IP address should be set to 192.168.129.201 automatically, but on the PC side you'll probably need to set the IP address manually (to 192.168.129.200 for example).

P.S. You can install packages from a local disk - your CF card for example.

uups, maybe this windows thing is somehow a blackbox for me. A couple of days ago we had some problems with the rom and winxp drivers and I am sure I reinstalled the drivers from the sharp 3.13 Cd. The drivers went ok with the OZ 3.3.6-pre1 so I located the resume/suspend problem in the hotplug.
The thing I dont know is, if windows cached the old drivers and did so as installing the other ones. I am confused now a little bit. If I told something wrong I am sorry, this was not my intention.
Cheers,
Sam
PS: I am mostly using linux and WLAN to connect my Zauri, so the windows thing is maybe too far away.

Hi,

I had similar issues with the Z not being recognized after suspend and spent quite some time installing/uninstalling win drivers. Here's what I finally did once I realized it was due to the suspend issue.

1. Be sure the drivers have been installed (if using Windows).
2. Set the Z to never turn off when docked.
3. Reboot the Z while in the cradle.
4. It should now be detected by Windows, and Linux should be able to connect to it as well.

These are the steps that worked for me. I have to reboot the Z everytime I dock it in order to use it on either Windows or Linux. I'm off to get the hotplug from OZ3.2 in the hopes that it puts this issue to rest for me.

so i thought i'd take a break from trying to figure out how to get my Z connected to ,y pc and though i'd try and move some files around using the SD chip I just bought, but no luck with that, i formatted it to FAT, but i can't see it under the \mnt\card directory
i can't even see the cf card i used to flash the rom, i'm getting a feeling that i need a helluva lot more knowledge about linux then I have right now. I've been surfing around and have spent the best part of a week trying to get my device to work but I haven't got any further.. Any advise.

Cheers

Try the 'mount' command to see whether the CF and SD cards are actually mounted.

If they are not try 'mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/cf' and 'mount /dev/mmcda1 /mnt/card'

There can be issues with the way Windows formats SD partitions, probably best to do it using fdisk on your Z.
