More SD Issues
« on: August 28, 2004, 10:54:00 am »
I attempted to run a program that is installed in the sd card and noticed that the entire bin directory on the sd card is missing... in an attempt to unistall the app via the gui installer i get an error saying that ipkg reported a problem.. sorry and it won't uninstall hence I can't reinstall it.

ideas?

For what is it worth, I use pdaXrom, and from time to time (after getting back from suspension) all my installed apps in my SD card dissapear ... I already read another post posing the exact same problem. I woner what rom you got installed ?

Might this be an issue with certaind SD (hardware issue) or software based ?

Well I ended up fsck'ing the sd card and was able to uninstall and reinstall my apps, but it looks like I will have to go with a different SD card if this kind of corruption continues. Luckily, I don't have anything important on the sd card like my backups... all of the really really important stuff is on a CF card.

Could I possibly ask which version of e2fsck you use ? is it by any chance 1.19 ?
Is there a single inode error at around node 8 and then when you fix that there's a huge chunk of nodes later on ?

You may want to take a look at my thread on Sharp ROMs about new versions of the tools. - Actually doesn't just concern Sharp ROMs but it was a more public forum than the Linux Issues forum.

Yes, my version is 1.19 and I do remember there being a single inode error but I can't recall where it occured. But if I hadn't run fsck until after I had a problem, I don't understand how the fs got corrupted to begin with. Unless it runs without my knowledge.

It seems that at least two 'tool related' issues seem to be present.

fdisk 2.11g doesn't reliably establish the geometry of certain SD cards, that has been observed with 512Mb SD cards (original thread under Linux Issues - 'Hmm, could this be the problem with SD cards...').

Furthermore there is a definite issue with version 1.19 of e2fsck if you ever have to legitimately check an ext3 file system. Normal operation of this version of e2fsck, following a dismount will probably just say that the file system was dismounted cleanly, however a forced check of the file system with this version will, if allowed to, strip the journal from the ext3 file system because it doesn't correctly identify the inode pointing at the start of the journal.

Now why would that happen ? a couple of possible reasons.

i. Cards ejected whilst Z switched off and not marked as cleanly dismounted.
ii. ext3 defaults to an fsck every 20 mounts or 180 days (or there abouts) which could cause the errors to occur.

Before giving up on the card completely I would suggest that you try the tools on the 'new versions of fdisk...' thread on the Sharp Forum. Please, please report any findings that you have with the tools there.

Regards,

- Andy

I'll give it a try. However I should point out, and I apologize that I hadn't to begin with, that I formatted my SD card to ext2... not ext3.

Well, I've finally had it. Turned on the Z today and the SD card isn't even seen anymore. No icon... nothing.. tried taking it out and putting it back in.. nothing.... tried rebooting and the Z locked. Had to do a hard reset. Thank God for my backup on the CF card. After looking through the forums, it looks like panasonic is the way to go, so I just ordered a 256 Mb Panasonic SD card off of ebay for $45 which seems like a pretty good deal since amazon wants $70 for theirs... We'll see how it goes... of course this all happens after the 30 day return period from CompUSA... I'll try reformatting it and using it in my audiobook.mp3 player. But this I swear... I am done with sandisk cards in the Z.

I just had same problem with my Viking 512MB ... this sucks !! but I wonder if some bad bit in pdaxrom (which is what I am using) is rendering hthe SD cards controllers useless ?  Sounds unlikely... but ... I wonder if it might be a possibility.

Just wanted to update everyone. It's been about a month with the Panasonic SD card and I have had no problems. I am the proverbial happy camper.
