Things to know about FREEDOOM.
« on: September 01, 2004, 01:09:08 pm »
I was trying to play freedoom and got to the notorious level three that apparently has no exit.....so I went to:

And it says that some levels are no finished or even broken....it gives a cheat code to get past these levels by typing a code:

"You will notice that not all the levels are done yet. If you get to a level that won't let you continue try this cheat: idclev## where ## is the level number. For example if you wanted to goto level 5 you would type during normal game play on the keypad 'idclev05'."

I went further into the links and found the freedoom project site and it has not been updated in a 1 1/2 years, so it looks like it may be dead, but I emailed the webmaster to see for sure.

Anyway, I spent at least an hour in level 3 before giving up and now I know I wasn't crazy, there isn't an exit (as far as I know) and the level is "in dev".

Perhaps the project could be restarted if enough people in this user group want to finish up the levels and at least have a complete working game.

Seems a shame for it to be soooo close but not done.

FREEDOOM MAIN WEB SITE:
Click here for official FREEDOOM (non-Z speciific) site

I personally have made levels for doom using variious GUI editiors (my favorite was WAD Author, but XWE is very popular)  and I can tell you that it is as easy to learn as as Excel or Word....especially the GUI tools.

Once you become proficient a decent level takes a few hours to create and test (most tools will check for obvious errors (like no exit) for you.

Example Editior:

[span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\']Would anyone beinterested in this if I got ALL the levels to work?

Enough Show of hands(support) would be enough for me to allocate time to finish and upload a version for Z use.

Thoughts?

Please post here if this is something you would be interested in playing.

So are these freedoom levels free ones (he takes a leap of imagination and guesses from the name ;-)?

Can one play the 'proper' (read not free) doom wad files with it? I assume so; in that case I'n not too bothered as I have a copy of doom and doom2.

More interesting for me would be this: http://psdoom.sourceforge.net/

Looks alot worse than I thought at first glance.  I thought just some levels were missing or incomplete.  However, Many monsters have no graphic representation (look no further than level 4 I think) and since I am no artist, I can't finish it as each monster requires abotu 15 angle shots (basic 8, plus walkiing, attacking, etc)

Drawing has always been my weak point, so I cannot finish this (at least not alone).  BTW, the mainatainer of FreeDoom was cool about making a quicjk finished version that can get repolished later by other authors 9or the originals if they come back).

Sorry to get anyone's hopes up.

Well, maybe just complete the levels for now...? Maybe once most of those are done, someone would be willing to contribute other things... Personally I'm not an artist, so I can't really help there.

But I'd certainly enjoy, ah, beta-testing Freedoom.
Sorry. I just don't have the time...
