OZ on a C750
« on: September 04, 2004, 11:30:15 am »
I want to install OpenZaurus on my SL-C750, but I can't seem to find anything on the OZ site to that effect.  They've got an install guide for the C700, but there's no mention of whether the instructions there will work with later models.  Will the same files (including the updater.sh) work with the 750 as with the 700?

Also, how would I perform a complete backup of my existing system in case something goes wrong or, alternatively, obtain a copy of an English ROM for the C750?  (I don't have any data, programs or settings saved on it that I really need to keep, beyond what came with it in the first place, so a stock ROM would work just as well as a backup, provided it's translated.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OpenZaurus can be found here
Look in the README.FIRST file for instructions.

To backup your system (which is a wise decision to do so), you could make a NAND backup from the D+M service menu.

Is the "D+M service menu" on the Zaurus itself, or in the PC software that came with it?  I rarely use the software, since I have a CF wireless network card and can download the files I need directly onto the Zaurus.

the d+m keys  hold and switch the battery switch on ( battery must have been taken out i like to wait 30 sec)  becareful in this menu as you can do damage to your Z and it will be a cool paper weight.
there is a german site with the japanese user manual translate to english i left the site address at work i will post tomorrow for you

loading rom like OZ or others

# Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin iZmage.bin updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.
# Make sure the Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.
# Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
# Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
# Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.
# Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu.
# Select option 4 (flash/update).
# You then have four options (1. USB, 2. CF, 3. SD, 4. Back)
# Choose either option 2 or 3, depending on which media you put the files on.

Well, I installed 3.3.5 without too much trouble, but I wan't able to get my wireless card working and there was a weird glitch where it would show a bunch of text on the screen when it wasn't supposed to (such as when suspending/restoring or inserting/removing cards) which wouldn't clear until that portion of the screen was redrawn (which made it very difficult to clear it from the taskbar.)  I'll try 3.3.6 instead, since you guys seem to be having better luck with that.  I figured I'd be better off with the version labled "testing" than the version labeled "expiremental", but I guess I might have been wrong.

Since you are getting along so well flashing new ROM's, don't forget to try the Cacko Qtopia ROM and maybe pdaXrom, so you can compare features and decide which one is best for you

I might try that once I get OZ working to my satisfaction.  I've installed 3.3.6 and everything seems to work alright, the glitches from the previous version are gone and I was able to get my wireless card working, but I can't seem to install any programs.  I want to use AQpkg to download/install konqueror-embedded, but while I can download it without trouble from the stable feed, I can't seem to find any option to install it.  I'd prefer to do this from the GUI utilities if possible, although knowing how to do it from the commandline would also be useful (although I'm guessing it's just ipkg install filename, as before.)

Also, it seems to have kept my old files from when I was using the regular Sharp ROM, which I have no use for and which are just taking up valuble space.  What's the safest way to completely blank my system so that I can install OZ on a clean slate?

You need to grab it from the feed in the directory where you found the ROMs themselves, otherwise they won't work (this is not related to your problem though).

I really can't remember how to use aqpkg to add a new feed, I always use ipkg from the command line. You need to add the feed somewhere, then update the package list (which downloads the list of available packages), then select the one you want and the rest should just happen.

Not sure about that one. You could possibly look at the file dates? The files which you don't want will be in /home, however there are also files which OZ will have placed in there so be careful.

Thanks.  I figured out how to add a new feed already, but I didn't know that it had to be the same one that I download OZ from.

I don't mind if I have to re-install OZ.  I just don't want to brick my system.

EDIT:  I tried using the feed from the directory that I downloaded the original files from, but that one doesn't even have Konqueror, or much of anything else for that matter beyond what was automatically installed when I flashed.  Does anyone with Konqueror (or any web browser, for that matter) installed remember how you got it?

That one crashes (gives a "SIGSEV" error) as soon as it tried to load a page.

Finally got Konqueror-embedded to run.  And all I had to do was ditch OZ and install PdaX!
