ZTEN & ENAMDICT

I had such good luck with my last question that I figured I'd press my luck with a second.

I currently use ZTEN to run several different dictionaries on my Z (EDICT, EJIRO, Life Sciences, etc.).  However, I really want to get ENAMDICT (free dictionary of Japanese proper names) in there as well, but I can't get it to work with ZTEN.  You have to realize I'm a total moron when it comes to computers.  I use the Z soley for the Japanese functions.

My question:  Does anyone have a converted version of ENAMDICT that I can get up and running with ZTEN?

I don't know about Enamdict, but a recent thread mentioned a site (Vector) where you can download a few free dictionaries which should work with zten:

One of the dictionaries is a Japanese names dictionary, though I believe it is Japanese-language only. Still, might be worth checking out.

Thanks!  I'll give it a shot.  All I really need is kana readings of Japanese names, so if this can do it, I don't care if it's all in Japanese.

Well, I recently converted ENAMDICT but it is about 30 MB in size (compressed, maybe some more clever indexing could help reducing size?).  I would need some web space to upload it...

Warning: Question by someone who knows jack about computers. Proceed at your own risk.

Question: I downloaded the "Jinmei Jiten" (Dictionary of People's Names) off of the vecor site mentioned above.  I extracted (hopefully that's the correct term here) the files (Data & Gaiji) from the .izh I downloaded using a program called EB Stuido as recommended by the readme file on the site. (See below) *Hopefully I did this correctly...

I took all of the files that were extracted (?) and put them in a folder called "PDDDic" as per the above read me file to create the same file structure. One small difference though - the Gai16f00 file does not appear in my "Gaiji" folder, but then again, none of my dictionaries have data in the "Gaiji" file.

From here, I put the PDDDic folder in a folder called "dict" on my Zaurus SD card where I keep all of my other dictionary files (EIJIRO, EDICT, etc.). I opened up Zten and added the dictionary. Zten at this point appears to be recognizing the new dictionary without a problem.

Unfortunately, after the dictionary is added, Zten fails to pull any info from it when I perform a search.  All of my other dictionaries work fine, but nothing from this one.  I even performed searches for the same items shown in the screen shots at the Vector site, but I got no search results...

What am I doing wrong?

Oops, one more thing.  Anyone have webspace where Halx can post the ENAMDICT file.  I can't be the only one who wants this on my Z.  Or maybe I am....

The people's name dictionary works fine for me.

As for ENAMDICT... I personally have never used a names dictionary.
I find it hard enough just to remember a name, let alone it's signifigance.

What program did you use to extract the files?  Can you give me a brief run through.

BTW, the name dictionary is not really for finding the meaning of names, but rather how to read them.  Even Japanese people often have trouble reading names, and I come across lots of them in my job.  I'd rather be able to look them up myself rather than having to rely on those around me...

Whoa! I too would love to have enamdic. I don't have a webspace to store it in, but maybe we could do a torrent or something? Or maybe you could just dcc it to us needy folks over msn or irc?

Also, is there a possibility of you converting kanjidic to fpw format as well, halx?

I would also be very grateful for kanjidic. I know kanji nirvana exists, but switching between 2 apps is a pain.

Well, I guess the problem is that the KANJIDIC file is not that easy to parse with plain Perl.  KANJIDIC2 which is in XML format would be much easier but I haven't been using an XML parser in a while.  Finally, I don't have much time at the moment.  Sorry...

Conversion of ENAMDICT was pretty straighforward as I just had to use the script for EDICT.

I can make it 22 MB if I don't index by Romaji...

I can make it 22 MB if I don't index by Romaji...

And if I just index by romaji, i.e. one can search only buy romaji key, I can make it as small as 7.5 MB (compressed).
