Just got my 860 and I'm lost
« on: September 20, 2004, 09:27:42 pm »
I could use a kick and in the behind here, if someone wouldn't mind.

I just received my 860, and I didn't go through one of the usual channels that converts things, so I'm staring at a lot of stuff I can't read or make anything out of.

I feel ashamed admitting this, especially since I'm something of a geek, but I can't even get the thing to turn on. I plugged in the power, and I see the power light is flashing right now, but no matter of pressing or holding the power button on the back (or hitting the one labeled "Power on" (home) on the keyboard turns it on.

If I could at least get this far, it might help for getting somewhere with this. I'm planning on backing the original rom up and putting pdaxrom on it (this might be a trick), but first on the list is the absolute basics.

I noticed there's a switch on the bottom. Is this switch the same thing as the battery retention clip? About the only thing I've found thus far is the stylus (and I already don't like it).

Anyhow, some help/advice/slaps would be appreciated. I won't be able to do anything major with it until tomorrow, but I'd at least like to get started.

The switch on the bottom should pushed forward once the battery and black bottom plate are in place.  Plug in the power adapter into the back of the zaurus and press the power button on the back of the unit.  Viola, it should start booting.  If that does not work it does not bode well for your Z.  It may be DOA.

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what you consider to be forward, but I've tried the switch in both positions and get nothing when hitting either the power button or using the key labeled as power.

Might I need to remove the battery? And if so, what releases it? I see what looks like a clip or some such at the opposite end of the power/charge light, but I don't see any easy way to manipulate it without it fighting back.

The switch on the bottom, anyway, is "down" right now, as in, it's farther away from the rear of the device. The charge light is flashing right now. If I move it, the light goes off, but as noted above, nothing happens when pressing power regardless of position.

To all the OZ folks, great work!  I hope this long wait is worth it!  In fact when I saw this, I retracted my ebay item for the Z 760!

Oops! Sorry wrong thread!  Should be in the OZ thread!

Ah ha! I'm a moron. Pay no mind to me. Move along...nothing to see here.

(Finally got that stupid clip out and got the battery in. Apparently, it won't run without it. Sigh.)

I'm sure I'll be back asking more questions in the coming days. For now, say hi to another newb!

(Here's to hoping I don't break something while messing with the thing since I can't read a lick of what anything says.)

What kind of adapter are you using? Perhaps it's not up to it (as the charge light is flashing rather than staying on constantly which it ought to do), and the battery needs charging - therefore it won't switch on?

For what its worth, I did the very same thing with (or should that be without?) the battery.

Very very easy mistake to make - obviously 100% Sharp's fault for poor design.  Ahem!
