3.5.1 vs Hentges
« on: September 22, 2004, 04:09:21 pm »
Does anyone have experience trying out both the new OZ and the latest Hentges OZ ? I checked out GPE and didn't like it - it looked nice but wasn't functional. and the old 3.3.5 was a bit too buggy, and I have to upgrade.

The first thing in favor of the Hentges is that they have a tarball of the entire application feed - very convenient. Against the 3.5.1 is the fact that the latest opie feeds for the SL5500 are in a directory named 5xxx, the xxx part trips the company's porn filter, and I can't access it.

But assuming these issues are resolved, what do various users think of these two options ?

It depends on what you are looking for. Both are actually good.

The Hentges feed represents a stable, mature, functioning release. I have used it for several weeks. It supports PIM and interconnect options and is relatively trouble free. For this one it is easy to simply say go.

The 3.5.1 feed represents the first 'public' feed of the new OE build chain. While stable it is not as mature as the Hentges feed. It suffers from many minor to medium early release anomalies. If you are looking for a tool I would use Hentges for a few weeks and then switch to 3.5.x when some of these bumps are cleaned up.

I've used Hentges (T5) for a couple of weeks & have only upgraded to 3.51 to investigate the speed improvement (which is substantial).

I got bluetooth working (for GSM dialup) on hentges, and was very pleased with its functionality.

Hopefully CoreDump will have a look t 3.51 @ some point, because it's still a bit wobbly around the edges.

Did you get bluetooth working between the Z and a cell phone with bluez capability?

Or did you get a GSM CF cell module to work?
