One thing I miss a lot in OZ 3.5.1 compared to Sharp based ROMs is chess...
There are good apps as gnuchess and zKinghts which exist for Sharp ROMs, but apparently nobody is insterested in porting it for OZ/OE
Am I the only one who miss that or is anyone actually working on that ? Would a good soul with OE skills think about it ?

I also miss alot while I try to install, it say qpe-base dependancy lacks. This means that we can not install directly some of our favorite applications.
By the way have you been able to sync or use file manager cyco jesus?
Thanks

The filemanager works fine here. I haven't tried to sync.

You've tried to install gnuchess ?

I just tried gnuchess 5.04 from ZSI and... it works !!
But there's still no GUI

- My desktop OS is GNU/Linux Slackware-current
- the filemanager was installed by default in the opie-image, I just launched it.

Well, I managed to compile Phalanx using OE, but it didn't make an ipk ; so I copied manually the compiled files on the Z and now knights accpet to start... but phalanx won't make a move, and if I launch it (phalanx) from the commandline it throw an error :
Code: [Select]
/opt/QtPalmtop/chess/engines/Phalanx/phalanx: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected
knights refuse to play with gnuchess either

Have you tried taking Knights from regular Linux and compiling it for zaurus

I use this GUI on OZ 3.3.3, try it on 3.5.1 with the gnuchess version noted above and report back (I have not flashed to 3.5.1 yet):

I didn't saw it at first sight but knights is in the feed, and it works ; so the GUI is OK.
Now the problem is to find a working chess engine. There's Phalanx in OE, with a little help it compile (add break; in io.c line 898) but it don't build an ipk ; and if you try to copy manually the files where they should be on the Z it refuse to play, no error, it just do nothing when it's its turn...

A bit OT, becaus I'm using the Sharp ROM, but I just bought and started using icschess from handango. (Yes, all done over my Z with my Trendnet 10/100 at a cafe with RJ-45 jacks.  ) Anyone use this? Its not bad for $5, but for the life of me, I cannot find a config file for it, so I have to reenter my ICS l/p every time.  Anyone know of a workaround?  Also (back on topic) does this work on OZ?  I've been holding off switching (partly b/c OZ doesnt seem to like my 5600).  GNUchess is ok (and the QT frontend is nice - it would be a shame to lose them if I switched...) though the lack of an opening book is annoying; 1 e4 d5 - every time center counter for king's pawn! I've started playing 1g3 for fun. Another workaround to deal with. At least it helps with tactical combinations.

Anyone dealt with any of this?

Thanks a lot... trying... it install fine along with knights, but... there's a "but"  it still don't want to play (maybe it's just a matter of configuring it, I'll try to look in that direction).

By the way, there's a little bug in the knights package, it install its knights.desktop in /opt/QtPalmtop/Games instead of /opt/QtPalmtop/apps/Games. I don't know how to patch it yet so I just signal the problem here.

P.S. : I just tried 'oemake phalanx' after updated OE cvs and now it build the ipk.

P.S. : I'm now waiting for more than 12 minutes that phalanx make a move

the upgrade feed still suffers from the problem reported above

/opt/QtPalmtop/chess/engines/Phalanx/phalanx: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected

if your really desperate

install phalanx and knight from 3.5.1 feed and upgrades

make symlink from /opt/Qtopia to /opt/QtPalmtop
(knights trys to call phalanx from qtopia directory (believe coredump may have fixed this but not in upgrades yet)

copy the phalanx binary from 3.3.6 to /opt/QtPalmtop/chess/engines/Phalanx

dont forget Phalanx needs to be executable ;-)

Start knights and enjoy.
